400M dipstick question?

I have a 1977 F-250 with a 400M in it.. And it does not have a dipstick.. And i cant seem to find one anywhere.. Does anybody know where i might be able to get one at.. Also somebody told me that all big blocks have the same dipstick and that i could use one off a 460.. Does anybody know if this is true or not?

Welcome to FTE!

Ready for some Info ?

First off no M after 400

It is only 400

It is part of the 335 engine series commonly called the "M block"..... while others call it the cleveland block

The 400 was created first

In 1977 the 351M was created and placed in trucks

The 351M/400 is NOT a Big Block

Ford doesn't use that term
Ford has engine families

http://www.fordclassics.com/enginespecs.html

The 460 is member of the 385 engine series.

TOPIC:

Dipstick ?

4x2 or 4x4 ?

Part stamping number for 4x2
D7TE-6750-AA

4x4

D7TE-6750-BA
or
D9TE-6750-CB

Contact Mikesautoparts for a used one or go to a wrecking yard and get one from any 351M/400 in truck from 1977 to 1979.

Visiting the FTE engine forums will be a big help for you

According to the tech article on this site about 351M/400 performance upgrades, as well as the very site you linked, the 351M came out in 1975, for cars first; then placed in trucks starting in 1977 (as well as the 400).

The original 400 was created in about 1972 and placed in Cars.

The 400 was placed in Trucks in 1977.

Now Perhaps created was the wrong use of the word

The 351M was first designated for the trucks in 1977.

Dennis the 351M was introduced in 1975 for use in large passenger cars not 1977. 77 was the first year they were put into trucks.

Ok on to the dipstick issue. The 4x4's had the dipstick in the oil pan and the 2wds had it in the front of the motor kinda by the thermostat housing. If someone put a 4x4 motor in a 2wd and changed out the oil pan you would lose the dipstick. BUT there is a knockout in the block where you could install a 2wd dipstick.
