Just pulled the valve cover on my '78 300...and it was full of soapy goo. I figure a head rebuild is in order. If I continue to drive the truck as it is now...will I do any damage?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Feb-02 AT 12:54 PM (EST)]Are you losing coolant or running hot. Fords have a tendency to have a white frothy goo inside the valve cover in cool damp weather and it aggrevated by the kind of oil you use parffin based is more likely to do this then the asphalt based oils. So unless you know you have a coolant loss problem. I wouldn't get to excited. Also if you pull the drain plug on the pan when it is cold and no coolant comes out first then I don't think you have a big problem. Usually this stuff will go away once the motor has gotten good and warm. Also check abnd see if you are getting any bubbles in the radiator when running if yes then there is gasket or crack problem if not then I think the cool damp scenario applies. Just my 2 cents worth.
Thanks for the thoughts. Maybe I jumped the gun thinking I have a gasket problem, but I,ve been trying to track down a noise, I thought it was an exaust leak, but I cant find it anywhere. When the motor is under load, it hammers away, so when I saw all the oil goo I thought I had found my "exaust leak" sound, ie the blown head gasket. I dont think i'm loosing any coolent, I'll keep an eye on it. My motor has 260,000 on it, so I may have the head rebuilt anyway. How much can I expect to pay? In closing, I'll say I'm having more fun with this rusty old junker than I thought I would! It makes driving accros town an adverture!
