What type trans do I have
M = manual 5 speed overdrive (Mazda?)
E = Automatic E40D
G = C6 auto
U = 4R70W (4spd auto with overdrive)
C = manual 5 speed close ratio (Z-F)
W = 5 speed H.D. Overdrive

Perhaps someone swaped the 5 speed shifter **** with a 4 speed one, and it's realy a 5 speed?
Not as stupid an idea as one might think, because I had a customer pissed that 5th did not work on his T18 trans, but there was no 5th gear even though the aftermarket **** on the shifter said there was.
I wonder if the one selling him the truck did it to try and add a little value to the truck?
I should get a TURBO fender ID and mount it on my truck.
From N/A to Turbo power in 15 seconds!

That granny first gear--what is it--6.40 to one?? It is perfect for 4x4ing and offroading.

I drove many telephone trucks that were 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton with 4.10 or 4.56 axles and granny geared four speeds and it was amazing the amount of low end torque that was available from the 223/240 and 262/300 Ford sixes. Even in trucks that weighed over 5000 pounds.Gearing is almost everything in a working truck.

Heres's what my Haynes manual says.
"Transmissions available from 1988 include the Mazda M5OD 5-speed, the S5-42 ZF 5-speed light and heavy duty and the T-18 4-speed."
Just something I was read
The FORD 3.03 was a 3 speed (fully synchronized no PTO).
Was used in the E100 to E350 and the F100 to F250 (4X2) from 1980 to 1986.
Borg Warner T18 4 speed (1st gear not synchronized PTO cover on right side)
Was used in the F100 to F350 and bronco (4X2 and 4X4) from 1980 to 1990 (or newer?).
Borg Warner T19 4 speed (fully synchronized PTO cover on right side)
F250HD to F350 (4X2 and 4X4) from 1983 to 1987.
It was only used with the 460 or the Diesel engines.
New process 435 4 speed (1st gear not synchronized PTO cover on right side)
F100 to F350 and bronco (4X2 and 4X4) from 1980 to 1987.
Ford 4 speed overdrive (fully synchronized no PTO)
E100 to E350 from 1980 to 1984.
F100 to F350 in 1980 (only?)
TOD 4 speed overdrive (fully synchronized no PTO)
F150 to F250 (4X2) 1984 to 1987
F150 (4X4) 1984 to 1987
Bronco 1984 to 1987
SROD 4 speed overdrive (fully synchronized no PTO)
F150 to F250 (4X2) 1980 to 1984
F150 (4X4) 1981 to 1984
Bronco 1981 to 1984
*M50D-R1 5 speed overdrive is used in the compact truck line only so dont be fooled*
M50D-R2 5 speed overdrive (fully synchronized no PTO)
F series 1980 to 1990 (or newer?)
E series 1980 to 1990 (or newer?)
Bronco 1980 to 1990 (or newer?)
ZF S5 5 speed overdrive (fully synchronized PTO cover on both sides)
F250 and F350 1988 to 1990 (or newer?)
E350 stripped chassis 1988 to 1990 (or newer?)
F super duty chassis cab 1988 to 1990 (or newer?)
Bronco/F150 (4X4) through 1988
An F150 4X4 in 1989, so it's either a T18 4 speed or a M50D-R2 5 speed.
And that's it, but only up to 1990, as per Fords Dealership issued Transmission application guide.
