92 Aerostar, 3.0 automatic. replaced shift linkage cable in July. I did not drive it for almost 2 months due to being on travel. I got back and now the speedometer does not work (electronic speedo) and the van will not shift into overdrive. Everything looks like it is hooked up fine. Also the alternator guage will drop and engine will start to stutter and sometimes die especially right after starting it, if it has been sitting for 6 hours or more. I can get it started but it turns over quite a bit and has a strong smell of gas fumes once it starts. Not sure if it is worth trying fix everything considering conditions of van, but would like to get overdrive working due to useage of gas going to work and back in drive only on the freeway.

Reason: added engine type and trans
first I would run all the gas out and put some dry gas in it and fill up. sounds like bad gas. Then I would double check the linkage and get a manual and make shure it is ad justed right.
computer locks out OD when there is an engine problem to protect engine and tranny.
please read the codes and post on forum
many auto parts stores will read for free, call ahead with your year
too low a voltage will cause computer cliches, failsafe limp home mode and low spark voltage
have the auto parts store load test your battery and test your alternator
Check all the fuses in the fuse box. My 95 3.0L had the dead speedo/odo problem (analog speedo, though) problem several months ago. At the same time it would not shift into OD. Thanks to some suggestions from the good folks here at FTE, I found a fuse blown (can't remember which one).
My problem turned out to be a shorted wire on the passenger door light switch. The interior lights, transmission OD control and speedo were on the same circuit.
If you do find a blown fuse, the door switches and also the wires going to the vanity lights on the sun visors should be checked.
