i have an 89 ford bronco fullsize with the 351 it recently died and not sure what to do... i left my house drove maybe half a mile and started to die sounded like i was running out of gas but i had a full tank then just died. it turns over a few times then sounds like its cranking hard then stops.
1. Check fuel pressure.
2. Check fuel pump relay for corrosion.
3. Replace TFI module (cheap pick and pull part). On 1989 versions the TFI was close to the manifold and takes on a good deal of heat. These were known to crap out. Later models mounted on the drivers side fender well.
If you're truck ran fine before, it will be something stupid that slowed her down.
also how do i get the codes? i saw a bunch of other codes starting with (p01111 example). i rented a tool from checker auto that gave me a couple dtc codes DTC :84 with no explanation, DTC :34 and said something about a egr control fault ex. v8 models. and defective egr pressuge transender sensor, evap control system fault / voltage higher limit also the tool was saying my engine was a 6cylinder.
Willing to bet the TFI module died if it was running fine, then just died. Happened like that to me on my old truck, die, sit for a bit and start right up like nothing happened. Tested TFI and it was good, the next day it died completely and tested bad. Go figure...
How is your battery charge state? If it is real low it can cause some problems.
When you hit the shrader valve on the fuel rail what do you get when it has
sat overnight? How about when you turn the key to run but do not start it?
Get the actual numbers off the computer it should be a sticker right next to
the connector. What is the general conditions of the wiring and connectors
Check the big connectors on the drivers side fender open them up and check
for corrosion, Get the Deoxit booster pen from radio shack it is one of the
best contact cleaners I have used and it supposedly improves the conductivity
It lasts a long time unlike spray cleaners which get everywhere. Have you done
the wiggle test with the code reader yet, Jiggle the wires, pull the connectors
a bit, smack the fenders. Check your fusible links sometimes they can look okay
but be burnt or even corroded with no outward signs!!
replaced the TFI and still nothing then codes i got were DTC :84 and DTC :34 but the tool i rented from checker auto said my truck was a 6 cyl...
If you're going to use a tool to pull the codes that none of us have, you are probably on your own with this problem. If you're going to pull them using the method that 90% of the members here use, we can help you a lot more.
I'm sure that no one here has any idea why the cheap POS scanner from the cheap chinese parts store is saying your truck is a 6 cylinder.
I would chalk that up to User Error. The code reader doesn't generate the tests, reports signal pulses from the ECU. Go here http://www.fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 and print out this section, then get an automotive test light and a length of wire if you haven't got em, and re-run the KOEO tests for current faults and stored codes. Pay particular attention to the section about terminating the test so you don't accidentally clear the stored error codes.
