Iam trying to find out why my oil pressure guage dose not work. As I was looking in the Chilton manual I found that is says the pressure switch is on to back of the motor just obove the tranny yet it also shows it on top of the HPOP??
Are there two? If so witch one workes the guage on the dash????
it is the one on top of the HPOP, and if it is not working and the connector is tight you probably need a new sensor. Mine quit while driving down the road, I stopped and fixed it (loose connection) but have confidence that if you loose oil pressure your truck will not run
Any body know how to test the sending unit and guage? The gauges are pricey so I dont want to just go out and by one to find out it something else..
Thanks
With the key in RUN and the engine off, disconnect wiring connector at the switch. The gauge should indicate on the LOW graduation or below.
Connect the wiring connector to the engine block ground. The gauge should indicate just slightly above mid-scale.
If the oil pressure gauge tests within calibration, replace oil pressure switch.
If the gauge still tests out of calibration, replace oil pressure gauge.
If nothing happens to the gauge when you ground the wire out, it is probably bad.
Once you get together all the parts and tools that will need, you usually find that little comment that says "this procedure is beyond the scope of the home mechanic" and now you are stranded.
They make it sound like the typical housewife is at Home Depot trying to install a faucet.
I hate them. And by the way their wiring diagrams suck too.
As far as testing your sensor goes, apply a known pressure to the sensor while it is hooked up and see if it reads. Use an air pressure regulator on your shop-air or something similar. I wouldn't go over 50 PSI, that should be enough to verify if it works or not.
If it doesn't read than unhook the wiring and check with an ohm-meter to see if there is a varying resistance as you change the pressure. If not, the sensor is prob. bad. If there is, then it's prob. not your sensor.
