Does anyone have any experience with the edelbrock performer series stuff....I am building a rat rod, with a little performance, my biggest question is the cam, will this cam set give me that nice loping idle any hotrod normally has? Got a 302 if it helps
I have used alot of Edelbrock stuff on my pickup. The only issues I ran into with edelbrocks stuff are:
DO NOT buy an Edelbrock performer #1406 carb. I hate it and its virtually untunable. It has a horrible problem with bogging when you hit WOT. It opens bogs for a second or two then goes. I cannot figure it out. If you do a google seach on 1406 bogging at WOT you will have hundereds of pages.
Also call edelbrock about your cam. I dont know if you are running adjustable rockers on your small block. But Edelbrocks website when I ordered my cam failed to mention that I needed an adjustable valve train. Which I was planning to upgrade to the following month. So I had to wait for a while for the parts to arrive.
Usually the help line on Edelbrocks website is very helpfull.
well, I called edelbrock about the camshaft kit, they told me I should not need any adjustable rockers for the performer series cam, but said If I was going with the torker series, I would need adjustable rockers and and screw in studs, they also emailed me a very detailed installation video for my camshaft...... but I am still scared to do it myself
Its not hard at all. I taught myself how to rebuild engines! a cam shaft swap is not hard if you have a basic understanding of how its done. Once your in there it will seem dumb how much you were worrying. Mostly what scarred me on my first cam swap was all the people telling me what could happen or go wrong when doing a cam. Know what? If you just take your time and work it slow it almost always comes of perfect.
If your looking for lope I used the performer RPM cam and I needed an adjustable valve train. Runs awesome though!
well, in case I might need some other parts, what things did you have to get for the adjustable valvetrain, you know, I got some money, I just may buy edelbrock heads and just rebuild the whole damn top end..... but can you give me a list of parts so I can decide?
The adjustable rocker setup is easy to install and is SUPER easy to adjust the valves. Im not sure if youve done adjustable valves before. Post again if you wanna see a completed picture of my setup.
the instructions with the stud kit were a tiny bit confusing partly because there was no pictures of the part they were talking about. But its Not hard once you see a completed picture of it.
oh yeah...... send me some photos if it is no trouble, i did buy my carb and intake today, not to expensive, at the local auto parts store, they had a special on the carb and intake, plus I got an extra 10% off for a military discount but all the extra plates and adapters and studs and gaskets quickly ran that price through the roof..... so in short, if I add the performer series cam, I will need new rockers, springs and rocker studs, or is that just something you guys put on for a little extra boost?
You will need for an adjustable valve train at least this is how it is on my 351 windsor. But 302 is almost exactly the same. I did not need new springs. My cam specs are for lift are: intake lift .496" and exhaust is .520".
I needed new rockers, stud kit, and I did new pushrods just because its a good idea.
Its no trouble at all. I document that kinda stuff when I do upgrades. So I can look back on it when I get older.

You said you called eldlebrock, and they said you do not need adjustable rockers for the cam you want? If this is true, then you do not need any of that stuff, just put the cam and lifters in.
The reason this is an issue is most Fords have a non-adjustable valve train. What you are supposed to be able to adjust is how much the pushrod pushes on the cam lifter. You want to push the lifter down till the "guts" are about in mid position. The lifter self adjusts, and this mid position gives it plenty of leeway to work. The Fords are machined from the factory to automatically set this position, so you just bolt it together and go.
But when you get into a different cam from a different manufacturer, they sometimes make the cam lobe different, which throws this built-in Ford machine work off, so you need some adjustment to put the lifter back in mid position, to keep the engine from ticking, and possibly not letting the valves open and shut correctly.
well, I wont doubt you guys.... I thought it kind of strange that edelbrock did not try to sell me another product... Thanks for the advice, I will get the new rocker setup, I mean I already spent this much money.... ,might as well not let this stop me... besides, I am sure you guys are right anyhow
