Most people consider it a granny gear, but it's synchronized(you can shift into 1st while moving) and it doesn't seem to be as low as some of the other granny gears in other transmissions. But the short answer is yes.
As my '89 has a ZF in it, I'll answer this as well.
1st gear is REALLY low (but I wouldn't consider it "granny low" really, since it's not THAT low), but like Franklin2 said, it's syncronized. It's great for starting off with heavy loads, but useless for day to day driving.
I always start off in 2nd gear (unless I'm facing down on a hill, then it's 3rd). The way I figure it is, I have L, 1, 2, 3, OD. *Also take into account I have a 460 with 4.10 gears.*
If I were going to put a manual tranny into ... well, anything... it'd be one of these ZF's. I'm quite pleased with the way it's set up. I'm toying with the idea of finding one for my '85 to mate up to it's 351W.
good deal it sounds like this is exactly what I need. I use my truck for pulling my boat and the low 1st will be great for pulling out of steep ramps. Plus the OD will help mileage....
