another question about this 55 f100 custom cab we just got. The paint code is "SS" which from what i can tell is the code for Special Order.
It seems like this truck was blue, with white roof, white fenders front and rear, white grill and white gravel shield.
could this have been original???
any of you other guys have the SS paint code on your trucks?
The SS code was used for fleet sales. Any company that had it's own color combo could get its trucks painted that way by special order. There would, therefore, be no limit to the variety of colors that could be found on an old truck having the SS code.
Thanks for the response. the color combo is kinda cool. I wish i could find out more of the history of the truck. And maybe what company or municipality it was from.
But, unfortunately we decided to put the trruck up for sale already. its in the classifieds
while we're on the subject....what's the S mean on this tag, I looked up all possible paint codes and couldnt find an S mentioned for '54
S and SS mean the same thing: Special Color. If there's no paint code at all, that also means special color.
There was no S code refering to a specific color from 1948 thru 1959.
Back then, Ford would not only paint a vehicle a special non Ford color (Coca-Cola red or yellow, for example), but paint trucks in colors offered for the cars, if a customer requested it.
This means you might find a 1954 Ford truck painted in Cameo Coral. Passenger Car color code R.
Since R was also used as a color code on trucks (Torch Red), you'll see either S or SS for a paint code.
The paint codes used back then didn't always mean the same thing for cars & trucks.
Also, the names of the colors can and will be different. A car may be painted Ebony, a truck Raven Black...same color, different vehicle.
It got more confusing in the 1960's with cars & trucks painted the same color, but three different names might be used. A 1966 Mustang could be painted Candy Apple Red. a 1966 T-Bird in Bright Red Metallic, and a 1966 F100 painted in Metallic Red. Same exact color used for all, just the names were changed (to protect the innocent ).
