Posted in flathead forum, but not much action there...figure this would be the place to get answers!
Hopefully someone here knows. I have a chance to get a 239 out of a car. I know the tranny is different, bell housing, etc, but if I use my flywheel, etc, will the car flattie work?
I believe it's a '49. I can get it for about $1200. It has been totally rebuilt, new valves instead of ground, lifters, etc. I will have to use my water pumps, and I have the oil pan off my motor.
I'm just looking at this as a way to hurry-up getting my truck on the road, and the price is very good, from what I've seen.
you will also need truck exauhst manifolds, the draft tube is that black pipe at the front of the intake manifold. Also I dropped the ball, do you still want that VIN plate?
'49 looks right, it has studs not bolts. The driver's head gasket appears to be leaking (or was in the past). Is he running the engine with that set up?? I'd be worried about that 2x4 popping out!
There's a little more to using a car engine than you'd think (mine has a car engine). The truck water pumps have the wide belt pulleys on them, so you have to change either the pulleys on the pumps to narrow, or the crank sheave to wide. Also the generator needs a wide sheave, that is also spaced differently I think. I chose to change the pulleys on the pumps, but I'd have to do it again anytime I change pumps and it's easy to bend the pulleys taking them off and on. If I had to do it again, I'd probably change the crank sheave to wide.
Shuck the exhaust and buy a set of Red's headers, you won't regret it!
PS -- you can use the car oil pan, I am. It leaks less (no clean-out gasket).

actually, the leak was from the hose, and left too long. It's not from the head gasket.
As for headers, I have the stock steering, and I've heard all the headers have a clearance issue.
I have my old engine, so pulley's shouldn't be much of a problem. My old engine block isn't cracked, so I could rebuild it, but I'm just thinking this is a way, to get the truck on the road, quicker.
Red's is one of the few that makes F-1 specific headers, no issues. Worth buying his "extensions" too, they get you back to near the rear of the trans from his headers. Slap on a set of Smithys and you can drive it!
$1200 isn't a bad price, IMO. Do you know what it's bored, what the crank was turned to? Did he use Chevy valves? (common mod)
Ross - yeah, seemed to me to be the right price! The gent has several flatties sitting around, as well as a bunch of cars. He has another one that smokes a bit.
Once in a while, I gets lucky. Now, just have to come up with the $$$'s. It's been a rough year, health-wise around here - I had a heart attack in Feb, wife had knee replacement, was down for 8 weeks, then I broke my ankle, I was down for 5, my daughter had shoulder surgery. Plus, just got a little cut on my hand, got infected, and my hand looks like a catcher's mitt!
