i got a 96 f150 in 2 wheel drive theres a clunk everytime i take off from a stop and when i lock the front hubs in and drive down the road i get a vibration that sounds like its comming from the front end. when i put it into 4x4 with the hubs in and i drive down the road the noise isn't as prominant but its still there...any ideas what the problem might be?
I replaced all the u-joints in the front of one of my trucks just recently, can still hear/feel it a little when the hubs are locked. The feeling goes away slightly when the TC is engaged and is "driven" instead of free spinning.
All my 4x4 now and the ones I've had in the past are/where like that to a varying degree, not necessarily a bad thing but look it over good. Stock joints are not greaseable so you may want to change them. The center one is often left "stock", it is the hardest one to replace.
Even greaseable ones often are left with one cap that never got any grease out of the four so it causes vibration even though has been greased on a regular basis.
Does not sound like a 4x problem if it happen is 2wd. While in 2wd you have eliminated the 4x drive parts.
Passenger side radius arm bushings are subject to more exhaust heat, the stock rubber bushings on some models were replaced by Ford to polyurethane parts. I would check these if you did not already. (especially on high mile trucks)
Also, check your motor mounts too.
It maybe time to check front rotors and bearings too.
Fortunately for you, this forum has a bunch of guys with tons of experience with these trucks.
SO BE READY to take notes tonight.
take your driveshaft slip joint/slip yoke out and grease it with some driveline grease. i had the same problem and this fixed it. just make sure to mark your driveshaft! and where it was when mounted to the rest of the driveline
I also had the problem of the sticking slip joint.
Got tired of pulling the driveshaft to grease the slipjoint.
Drilled and tapped it to accept a grease zert.
Now when I do an oil change, I give this zert a
couple of pumps of grease. No more slip joint clunk.
