Timing?

I have an 89 f150 with a 302 that has been converted to a carb. It has an edelbrock intake, carb, and cam with stock heads and a pertronix distributor. My question is what should I set the base timing to. Is it safe to advance it as far as possible before detonation, or are there general guidelines as to how far it can be advanced. I have the timing set at 18 degrees right now and it is running fine. Is it safe to advance it any further?\

Thanks

I was always told that base timing is 10*BTDC.....when I advanced the timing in my 95 302 I was told to advance it up to 15* or more and see where it started to ping then retard it a few degrees and play it by ear......You could play with it a bit more but 18* is as far as I'd go with it....JMO Luck

Advance it until you hear it ping. Then retard it a bit. As much timing as your setup can take will be fine. I've seen 302's run 20* and beyond just fine.

So it won't hurt anything if crank it up till it pings and than retard it?

Thanks for your help.
