adjusting hydraulic lifters

I have a '68 240 F100 and my original Ford manual states that to adjust lifters to place cylinder at TDC back off rocker nut so there is up and down slack, then tighten until pushrod cannot be turned by hand, then add one additional turn. However, when I recently changed my cam and lifters I followed these instructions and resulted in a no start condition. The motor sounded like I left the sparkplugs out, it spun really fast, so I figured that the valves were to tight so I readjusted the valves and only turned them down 3/4 turns after taking up slack and the engine started right up. Do the more modern lifters require a different adjustment procedure? I installed a comp cam and lifters.

Hydraulic lifters don't need to be adjusted. I guess the older motors have a "tappet" adjustment on the rocker arms, but I've worked on my 1988 head (my engine's, not my brain) a couple of times and as I recall there's nothing to adjust. By the way, those lifters seem to hold up well, I still have my originals, 190,000 miles.

You must have had valves open at compression stroke. That's probably why it turned so easy. You got it fixed though, way to go.
