I am new to this fourm and am looking for answers. I bought my truck over ayear ago. It's a 91 f150 4.9 mazda 5spd. Let's start with the engine. It ran rough when I bought it, I thought it needed a tuneup. It ended up needing a new head and intake it ran better but not good.Every time I turn around I am puting money into it. Currently the oil pan has a rust hole in it, the freeze plug in back of the engine is leaking, the transmission has been leaking from the top(2 previous atempts to stop that have failed,) the brakes leak and I may need a new master clinder. To top it off this morning I started and went to take off and it stalled tried to start agin, it fired check engine light briefly came on, it started to stumble but by feathering the gas I kept it running. This is my first Ford, I bought it because of the reputation of this motor. I am going to repair this myself so any technical advice would greatly appreciated. i.e. freeze plug size, tips on sealing tranny, and oilpan replacement. I am going to own this truck for a very long time since I am buried in it all ready. so thanks
Well, don't give up on it. Sounds like the previous owner(s) just didn't believe in maintenance and upkeep. I'd start with the brakes, since those are indispensable. Not hard to do yourself, or very expensive if you have a quality shop do the job.
Go to this website: http://www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html
It will show/teach you how to pull trouble codes yourself, with only a jumper wire. That's the key to getting your truck in shape...chase down each code logically, with help from this board, and do the fix. Most aren't that expensive and you can do it yourself.
Don't know about your tranny, but since its a manual it should be an easy replacement if you can't stop the leak. Check the yards. Some folks don't like the Mazda tranny, but there are other options.
You can do your pan and gasket yourself, without much effort. Just hang in there and keep posting. We'll help you as much as we can.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Mar-02 AT 04:05 PM (EST)]The trans. leak from the top I'll assume is from the rubber plugs in the top of the trans. There are 3 (? correct me guys if I'm wrong)of them. These have a tendency to harden over time and begin to leak. You can do some searchs on this forum--there are a couple of guys who have replaced them without taking out the transmission. I just had my 5 speed out and these were replaced. You might be able to get at them from where the shifter goes into the cab.
The rust hole in the oil pan is another problem with these--I replaced my oil pan which will require raising the engine several inches. If yours isn't leaking you might get away with sanding and repainting it. Again, there are several posts on the forum with this issue.
The guys on this forum are great--they can really help you.
Just sold 91 F250HD 5spd to friend...204,000 miles...gas mileage same as new, after he begged me for years.
Then purchased two 4.9l's from Govn't contractor...a 95 F150 and 95 F350. A little TLC and they are as good as new. 4.9l's are very inexpensive to repair and maintain. Fix it right and you'll be pleased with the dependability.
