The drivers side auto hub on my 87 f150 is loose the screws are tight but the cap moves around, what would cause this? after I take it out of 4x4 the drivers side will try to lock in again and I have to stop and back up again,it will do this for a week or so than stop.
Sounds like the hub is wearing out. You could purchase new or used auto hubs but they are not as strong as the manuals and it is considerably more expensive. If I were you, I would put on a nice set of Warn hubs. I thought that it would be a pain to get out and lock in the hubs with my truck, but I've found that its not a big deal at all. If I think that I will need 4 wheel drive, I just lock them in before I go and thats it. Its also easier on components than the autos since the entire front drivetrain doesn't have to come up to speed when you shift into 4hi since the front hubs are already locked.
Agreed, manuals are a better way to go. Your hub might be loose as a result of it missing the retaining ring. With that retaining ring in place the hublock assembly should not move at all. Dissemble it and reference this diagram to see if you're missing the ring:
I keep the autos because as many miles I drive the weather can change in a matter of feet. Not miles . Mine were new when I bought truck . But I carry a strap as I know they dont like stress. Other wise the new warn premiums I have would be on.
But I used to just leave manuals them lock in on day like that same thing just worse MPG
