Tried to start my truck this morning and I had a dead battery. Opened up the hood and the driver's side battery + post was full of bluish green crystals. Hooked up my wife's car to the truck, but it didn't have enough power to help turn the truck over. Put my booster pack on the other battery and still nothing. Tried periodically, every 5 mins, but still nothing. Left everything plugged in for 25 mins without touching it and then she started.
I know this battery is finished and I will be replacing. Should I replace the other battery as it as been taking added strain by compensating for the other? I don't think that these batteries are on warrenty as it is an 05 and has 116,000 km (70,000 mi) on it. Are both batteries the same model?
Both are the same.. and honestly I always learned to replace them in pairs.. But you could probably get away with just changing that 1 until later.. Heheh you probably should replace your wife's too, I'm sure her car is swearing you up and down for the workout you gave it.. LOL
OEM or upgrade to gel? Are the gels the same physical size?
Seriously.. If you got the cash, go get Optima's.. They are by far the BEST batteries for our truck.. They aren't cheap, however you won't die out as quick as standard OEM batteries go..
ALWAYS replace them in pairs. I've heard of many Optimas biting the dust prematurely so I would probably stay away from them. I've got a Werker from Batteries Plus in my Explorer and it is doing great. I had a sears battery in my Mustang and it was 6 or 7 years old when I replaced it.
BTW, I see you are i northern Ontario. Cold weather is very had on batteries so I think that 2 years isn't all that bad out of a battery. You might want to think about getting battery warmer blankets or something like that for them when it gets really cold.
Optima's might be good? But they don't last any longer and aren't warranteed any better than standard batteries. For the same money you could get two sets of lead acid batteries and a twelve pack with the change.

MMMMMMMM! Twelve pack! You sold me. I think I will stick to the OEM's and replace both. Right now I have a thin insulated black blanket around my battery. It does not give off heat or anything. Is this a battery blanket or is there something you can get to give off heat? It gets pretty cold up here especially at night (-35-40). What are other upgrades I would benefit from for extreme cold like this.
I noticed that your truck is a 05. How many miles do you have on your truck? I have a 03 with 62,000+ miles with the original batteries. It may be getting time for me to replace mine?
