I am looking for any help with my spring tune-up that I can get.
Specs.
1988 F-250, 2wd., light duty,
4.9 L, 5 speed, no air
I have heard that these inlines have a perfection zone when it comes to timing. Where is it as far as degrees go.
Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, belt, battery, batt cables, starter, alternator, starter solinoid, air filter, fuel filter, and all bulbs were replaced over the course of last summer, as well as two ign. modules and a set of front brakes.
It has been about 17,000 miles since then and I was wondering what to try and get ahead of next. The tires and body are great and the tranny isn't acting up. I drive about 60 miles a day on a highway at 65 mph. No stop and go traffic.
The truck has about 98,000 on it now and my only complaint is that the cruise and horn quit working. Moving the horn button to the dash fixed it. And the lurch I get from the motor when I turn on the headlights. Any clues anyone?
When I turn on the headlights at normal highway operating speed, the truck physically lurches. It only does it once right when I pull the **** out. The amp gauge drops a bit, but not enough to get alarmed over. The truck does not seem to lack any power with the lights on. I have always just thought it to be a quirk that my truck has. Think I should be worried?
Sounds like you're keeping that truck in good shape. Here's a couple other preventive maintenance items, check uiversal joint on drive shaft, lube tie rod ends or replace (they oughta be about worn out), change rear end fluid and transmission fluid, check brakes (rear shoes outa be about shot)and even though the hoses seem to last a long time you may want to replace them before they start leaking.
That water pump has to be well worn too. For the lurch, you said you replaced the alternator and it didn't change the siutation? I can't recall if you have an auto or standard trans.and maybe the electric OD is doing something. I also wonder if your AC compressor is kicking in some kind of way.
