All right I have a 1988 Ford Bronco 2, with a 2.9L V-6, 5-Speed Transmission, and 4x4. I have put brand-new- internal fuel pump, external fuel pump, as well as fuel filter in. Have done a complete tune-up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor). I have also just finished putting new timing gears and chain on too. It also has a brand-new water pump. Now the problem I am having is that when I turn the key the engine rolls over as well as fires but does not continue to run. When I turn the key I can watch the RPMs climb and can feel the engine trying to come to life. But as soon as I let off the key the engine dies. The battery is brand new as well and has a decent charge on it. The time gears were put back in at TDC and the rotor points to number 1 contact6 when at TDC. If any1 could help with my problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Sounds like the timing is off. Did it run before all the changes? I hate to bring the bad news but you might need to yank the timing cover. Pull it and the disributor, start fresh with the timing. Be sure you are getting number one (driver's side front) to TDC on the compression stroke. You can feel the piston travel up with a screwdriver in though the plug hole, then to be sure slide the timing cover on with a few bolts and set the balancer on the crank to get as close to TDC as you can get it. Check your cam timing. From there reinstall the distrubutor and get it clocked to number one. Check the plug wires for the correct firing order. It kinds sounds like ignition timing, but since the chain was replaced as well you might want to check it too.

I agree with this, once I set mine to the exhaust stroke and it would barely run and it backfired.

I don't know what you mean by contact6, but, at TDC #1 should be at about the 1:00 position if memory serves me correctly. I would have to go outside and check my truck to be sure.
The timing is correct. Everything wasw put back to TDC and when looking at the Distributor the rotor points to Number 1 contact (which is at the 11:00 o'clock position). The plug wires are correct in placement and order. The ignition switch might due it though. I was acutally just talking to somebody about the ignition switch. Could the problem possibly be that module on the distributor? Thanks for the input so far.
Turn your ignition switch to on and check for voltage at the battery lead on the coil. It is the Red wire with a lightgreen stripe. If you are getting voltage there, it's not your ignition switch.
