Sup....... i got a 88 f250 in febuary and my oil pressure gauge reads normal till it get moved then goes low, had a new oil pump put in and that didnt fix the problem then i was told by ford that the gauge is bad due to faulty magnets inside the gauge, any ideas where i can get a cluster that works. Thanks for any help.
Yeah i did a few months ago, tried all kinda panels and only the original works the only thing i know to do is to have a mechanical and the factory runnin at the same time
The oil gauge has a resistor in it that sets the range, the guage is no more accurate than an idiot light. Put a good mechanical on it and forget the dash unit. I know you didnt need a new oil pump. Mine had 300k on it and I put it back in. it was in spec and the new melling pump wasnt even close.
just go to your nearest O'reillys or Autozone or something and get the little 3 guage cluster that has temp, oil psi, and voltage guages and install them then you know what ur engine temp is not just normal i put another motor in my truck because the oil psi guage was reading 0 the dash guages aint wortha crap
Does the 88 still have the IVR (instrument voltage regulator) on the rear of the cluster. A cheap part, little silver box attached to the rear of the cluster regulates voltage to the guages....when it is bad things go wierd. Should be availabe at most AP stores or Ford.
thanks for the help, i dont think it has a voltage regulator, i found 2 new gauges from ford this mornin for it i hope this might fix it, i prob will have 3 other gauges runnin just to make sure on the real condition of my engine........ thanks again
Take the wire off the sending unit. With the key in run, but the engine off, touch the wire to the engine block. The guage should swing full scale high or low. Then take the wire off ground and let it hang in the air. The guage should swing full scale the opposite direction. If it passes this test, the guage and the wiring to the guage are ok.
I would take the advice of the other posters, and put a real guage under the dash on it. You may feel stupid wasting all that money by using the info from the stock guage, but we all have done something like that at least once
