Hi Everyone, I am doing the front breaks on my 65 f100 and would like to know the maximum specs that the drums can be turned too. And how do you measure said specs, I want to know before I go take them to have them turned.
I know some of you are asking why dont you just put disc breaks on it.
Well,...Thats for My 66 F100 project!
O yea, Do the drums come apart from the Hub ?
The measurement specs should be on the outside of the drum. When I first got my '64 road-worthy, I couldn't find the numbers on the old rusty drums. So I just got 4 new drums for $50/ea.
Since I couldn't find the numbers, I took them to the local Midas shop to see if they had maybe a book with the numbers for it, but they couldn't come up with anything either.
I had to remove the drums from the hub when I first took em off. It's a giant pain in the ****. To get leverage for whacking it loose, I got a long lead pipe and ran it through the truck to the other side sticking out, with the end against the lip of the drum. Then I had someone hold it while I swung with the sledgehammer. Most of them popped off without too much trouble but one of them (rear right) I swear was the most exhausting effort to remove. I ended up heating it and bashing it, heating it some more and bashing it until finally POP, it slid off.
If any of them are really stuck and you do try heating them, be careful so as not to warp or bend the hub or anything...

A machine shop has to press off the drums from the hubs in order to be able to turn them. Also have the brake shoes sized to the drums. New lug studs ARE required to press the drum back to the hub.
btw: .060 is the maximum amount the brake drum can be turned out to, by CA law.
