I have a 77 F250 and my 4wd stopped working. I'm not a auto mechanic wizard but I can usually figure out auto mechanics. What should my first steps be in trying to identify the problem?
So far my hubs turn on the wheels, but not sure if they are locking.
When I shift my 4wd from 2 hight to either 4 high or low the gears are catching.
Thanks for any help
sounds like you have a bad lockout hub.with transfer case in nuetral turn your front driveshaft by hand ut should turn the axle shafts lock 1 hub in that side should stop .
you can usually feel the hub lock when turning. now lock the other side in repeat when you feel it lock you should not be able to turn the drive shaft if you can and 1 axle shaft is still turning check that hub if you can turn it and no axle is turning look for a broke inner axle or spider gears or ring and pinion.
your going to have to see if the drive shaft is turning or if the axles are turning. if the drive shaft and axles are all turning, its probably the hubs. if not, it's something withthe transfer case.
Thanks for all the help. My transfer case is working.
I turned the frond axle shaft and it turned freely when on 2wd. I put it in 4wd and it locked up.
I then spun the axle shaft (in neutral) and it turns both sides of the axle. The hubs won't lock.
Can it be the axle or the hubs? If I take my axle apart, would I see something clearly broken that I could replace? If I took the hubs apart would I see something visibly wrong? Is it common for both hubs to break? Could it be something as simple as the vacuum line?
The last time I used my 4wd it worked fine. I pulled a truck out of the mud and had all of my four wheels spinning.
you dont have vacuum lines controlling anything in a 77. its all mechanical. you've got to turn the hubs until they click into place. you will be sure that they are in. turn em until they click.
