Again, this signal isn't a 5-volt reference signal. The modules look at the frequency of this signal to determine the vehicle speed. When a predetermined frequency is reached, the GEM locks the doors. When the correct frequency is reached, the PCM considers locking the torque converter, depending on TPS, engine load, coolant temp, etc., etc.

Ok that makes sense and the door does lock. would it be correct to assume then that the signal then goes from the instrument cluster back to the PCM for the torque conv to lock up, so it passes through the speedo? The thing i am not getting is if all other features are working except when putting it in gear and taking 5+ minutes for the transmission to engage and the speedo not working that the two are connected. If i get the speedo working again by correcting the head unit, then the transmission will function and engage as it should?

I greatly appreciate the help.

Hi I have been in the transmission business for about 30 years I would say you have two different problems. basically you could unhook every electrical device off of the transmission and it should engage fine. if anything it will cause high line pressure because of no electric to the electric pressure control solenoid and will to default to high line.

I believe on the 5.4 the GR/BK wire comes out of the VSS into a splice. The splice feeds the PCM, the Cruise Control module, and the GEM in parallel. That way if any of the modules fails the others should keep functioning. The GEM connector passes the signal through the GEM connector (in on pin 21, out on pin 14) to the instrument cluster. That way if the GEM fails the signal still gets to the instrument cluster.

The delayed tranny engagement is probably a tranny issue - sounds like a bad lip seal. Is it worse in the cold weather? Did it start at the same time the speedo quit working? Is the tranny fluid level correct. Is the correct fluid in the tranny?

Not sure if the speedo quit with the tranny problem. Fluid is good and correct type. Guess I will have to take it to a tranny shop. Thanks to both you pdqford and outsdr2.

See the door post VC (Vehicle Certification) Label. The "TR" code should be the letter "U" (= AOD) or the letter "E" (= E4OD)

i found that it is a U, but on another post on the site it said it would be a 4r70. are the 2 essentially the same, or would i need to find an AOD transmission or rebuild kit?

UPDATE:

Finally got around to the transmission. I got a rebuilt one with a 2yr warranty of the bay. Installed with new Torque but now the Overdrive light just started flashing after a few miles. it flashed once when i gave it gas after slowing down to take a turn. did not do it again for a bit, then it did it again 2 more times. When returning home from the test drive the overdrive light would flash 2 consecutive times and then go out when giving it gas from slowing down again. Not sure if this is from when first installed and had to add more fluid when running or if it is somehting new. I put 1.5 to 2 quarts of fluid in the torque and 6 quarts in the tranny before starting. Then slowly added the rest to bring it up to level while running through the gears.

if this is a code type indication is there a way to clear it in case it is a false code to see if it comes up again?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be great at this time.

Problem resolved........it was a bad connector on the tail shaft that had a broken pin. replaced and good to go now.

The other problem with the speedo not working was the speedo itself.

Thanks for all the help.
