[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Apr-02 AT 03:06 AM (EST)]To get the intake off seperate you'd have to unbolt the three that are at the center area (together) then unbolt the top bolts and loosen the bolts between the two on the bottom side. The exhaust manifold would probably have a tendancy to slide down not to mention the nightmare of loosening the EGR pipe (if you have one)-that's a back breaker. In my opinion, plan on removing the pair together.
I went over this again in my head, if you leave the exhaust man. bolted up to the exhast pipe, it may keep it steady - but be very careful getting that pipe to the EGR plenum loose. The steel bushings tend to gall the aluminum. Only loosen the compression fitting, not the bushing into the plenum. Lots of penetrating fluid before hand - if it has the EGR source pipe. Careful not to break off the choke tube(s).
Yes I do have the EGR. In fact that is kind of what started this whole thing. I hade a leak somewhere it was sucking in air. I thought it was the gasket between the EGR plat and the intake, but after spraying some carb cleaner around while it was running, if I sprayed it on one intake port the engine would rev up about 200 rpm, so I think it is the intake gasket.
I didn't have a wrench big enough to try to remove that EGR tub yet. So I should try to remove it from the plate? Up top that is?
I did the gasket swap recently because I was putting an EGR on my truck that originally had one (P.O. took it off along with the intake / exhaust manifolds that work with the EGR and the thermac). It was a bear to do myself. A helper is good & I did have to invest in some larger wrenches to get the egr feed / source tube on (in my case). Personally, I'd buy a mechanics stethescope to locate the leak before tearing into the manifolds. There's going to be a bit of stuff to disconnect to do so as well. Label everything! Take notes if you do the job -for the reassembly.
