Hello everyone. I got my first post done in the introduction forum, so I decided I might get a little more involved in the main forums. I've got a 1993 F-250 4x4 with a 7.3l IDI and a E4OD. 4:10 gears and a little over 164k on it. I'm getting usually getting 17 mpg or better highway. I've turned up the fuel and put 5" stacks on it. I'll maybe post some pictures when I go home over Thanksgiving, as I'm at college right now.
So here's some decisions that I wouldn't mind some opinions on. I bought Champion glow plugs on ebay because they were quite cheap and I figured there couldn't be that much difference in quality. After buying them I read on these forums that Motorcraft gp's are pretty much the only way to go. I found out the hard way, and I've already had 2 burn out. I still had some of the older ones to change back. Should I buy some Motorcraft plugs and get it over with before some tips swell up on me?
If I would decide that injectors would need to be replaced in the future, what brands would be the ones to get? I've tried to do some searching on the forums, but I haven't found as much info on them. I look forward to your opinions, and hopefully I'll have something to contribute at times also.
Get those champion plugs out while you still can. Get the motorcraft/beru plugs in there. Don't wait to learn the hard way.
If you hunt around you can get new injectors for about the same price as getting your rebuilt. If you have a turbo engine, make sure to get the G code injectors
Go to azone ask for part ZD9...... do not mention Beru or glow plugs...... apparently they are selling for 2.99 each if they are in stock.
You didn't say if this was a turbo motor or not, but the factory turbo injectors are code "G" and the pump is a 5070 and the non turbo are "E" injectors, and a 5013 pump.
The closest autozone is about an hour drive. I called this morning and they had 16 in stock. Luckily my parents were going to that town today so they already went and picked them up. I got all 16. The truck is a non-turbo so I guess I'd be looking at "e" injectors if I get them. Is there an easy way to test if the injectors are leaking down without taking them out? My guess was starting it up after it was sitting for a while was some black smoke from excess fuel in the cylinder. Is that possible or does the injection pump give some more fuel on start up? If I did have to take them out, my dad says we have the equipment to test them.
Testing involves pop off pressure, spray pattern and no leaking or dribbling when the injector closes.
The injection pump trys to maintain an RPM.
Since idle is 750 RPM with an automatic, the IP is feeding it more fuel since the starter is only turning it at 300 RPM or so.
Another possibility is you have a couple injectors that are leaking fuel into a couple cylinders.
