I just recently pulled and cleaned my gas tank. Everything looked good no rust etc. I replaced the cork gasket for the sending unit and buttoned it back up. When I turn the key the gas gauge registers but then slowly returns to a empty reading?? Does anyone have an idea why? I'm stumped.
I guess I should also add that I have never put gas in it till now due to not knowing what was in there.

I think it may be a connection or a wire that runs to the gauge, that needs some attention. I also, have a gauge on 1 of my trucks that I replaced everything nd the gauge acts empty, until I move the wire......I would look at the wire leading around the door to the dash.........Bill
mine reads full..... no matter what... until I disconnect the wire at the sender
but when i pull the sender and test with meter, it seems normal... according to published ohm readings, and seems to respond well when moved thru range of motion.
