What does the stupid emission light read off of? I have no cats and my egr is plugged, and the only time the emiss light comes on is when I turn my key on.
Makes sense
I always thought that it was supposed to be telling me that something was wrong with emission systems.
Nope, that's just the truck letting check all the bulbs. It will send a signal to every light in the cluster when you first turn it on so you can see if any are dead. As long as it goes out after a few seconds you are fine.
Around here it is an automatic emissions test failure if your engine light doesn't prove-out.

The CEL bulb is not in the start switch lamp prove-out circuit, it will only be turned on and off by the computer.

Whatever the exact process, the effect is the same. The vehicle powers the lamp at startup just long enough to show you the bulb still works. It SHOULD light for a few seconds as that is what it is supposed to do.
PCM Pin 17 -> DLC -> Dash - I know because I had to rewire mine before I could get it registered. Stupid PO thought twisting bare strands was a good way to make electrical connections.
The EMISS light is not the same as the check engine light. The EMISS light is turned on by a timer that is set to turn on the light around 70-80000 miles. There's a reset procedure in either a Haynes or Chilton manual, but since it doesn't tell you anything useful, you might as well just unplug the timer module under the dash. Basically it was Ford's idea to get you into the dealership to have them check over everything and throw them some money. In addition, the check engine light is not even wired to the engine computer on 87 model year trucks that I have seen (maybe even some early '88s as well).
Hi,
I'm new here but noticed Eric's 11/19/07 reply to this thread.
I couldn't find the reset procedure in Haynes but my light's been on for months....grrrr
I've got an '87 HD 250, 460 w/ 4v. NO sensors, cats or computers, AFAICT the only emissions devices I've got are the EGR and the air pumps.
Is this the "extended useful life sensor" I see in the schematic? What does this timer do, read engine hrs.? can anyone tell me how to reset it?
Thanks,
Jim

I think I remember Eric telling how to do this about a year ago. Just search his posts for it.
I found the reset procedure in my Haynes manual (didn't see a thing about in in Chilton's). I reset mine once, but have since just unplugged that module all together. I can't remember if it was called "extended useful life sensor" or something else. I'll try to remember to look through my Haynes manual next chance I get and post back to let you know.
Hey Eric,
Thanks for your reply.
Which Haynes manual do you have?
Mine has a red & pink cover and says '80 thru '88 2&4 wd all full size F-100 thru F-350.
The index under "emissions" doesn't pan out.
Per Bill's reply I've just searched every one of your posts on this site -see above- Whew!
I suppose I could just take the bulb out there's not that much that could go wrong.
I'll look again, thanks.
I think the Haynes manual I have covers 87-96 F-series trucks. It's been so long since I used that section that I can't remember where it was located. I'll check when I'm at my parents' house this weekend and let you know what I find.
