9" washers

Are the copper washers that go on the studs of a 9" third member absolutely necessary? If they are what is the purpose of them? Thanks

When i put my diff back together i did not use them, I have been running my truck for three years since then and no problems. I dont know what they do either.

i normally distroy them getting them off so they dont go back on, no clue what they are for but every 9" rear i have had and torn into never got them back on and didnt leak so i wouldent worry about them.
