I've been pretty lucky the past two weeks at work and now I gotta gloat just a little . I work at a Canadian Tire (Large hardware/parts store) and I'm the lucky one who gets to throw out the trash, last week I found a set of Gear wrenchs that was supposed to be thrown out, only problem was that it was missing two wrenches so I got 5 gear wrenches free (the set retails for $99)! Then this week they were going to throw out a 7 drawer tool chest with ball bearing slides because it was dented, I got it for $130 it retails for $369.
Sorry guys
Good score, dude! That deserves a "You Suck" award!
Totally agree. A word of caution. Dumpster diving can still be considered theft. Seeing that they made you buy the tool box, I'd bet you would get fired or worse if they knew about the wrenches. Just something to be considered.
That's the problem with big corporations they would rather see it in the landfill then
with someone who couldn't afford it but will use it!! My fiance worked in the deli of
a major grocery store and they would throw away almost full packages of meat
because it was opened and only a few slices cut out and they didn't sell it by a certain
date, So they would throw it in the trash and compact it so noone could take it. Of
course the same thing happened with the meat and veggie department. I guess they
get full price on the tax write off if they have to throw it away instead of discounting
it or giving it away to a food bank or something. They also had a camera on the trash
one of only a few at the whole store, So they could call the cops if they caught a
dumpster diver, That is just plain crazy with all the starving people or the people on
food stamps. I use to buy the out of date steaks when they used to do it, It was
just perfectly aged beef or lamb the way I saw and it saved me boo koo $$$!!
I know I do suck, but what can I say I guess I'm just lucky .
About the whole stealing from the garbage thing, I know it's something that's frowned upon but the store is in such dissaray right now that managment doesn't even care anymore, so I'm sure nobody is going to say anything. Heck I've seen managers take stuff from the junk pile.
I work at Tractor Supply, and I'm always taking something home, weather it be bags of concrete that have been split open and half gone, water tanks that are cracked, heck even got a $50 stainless steel tool box for 10 bucks because it came missing a hinge.
Wise employers would recognize this as a benefit of employment. Naturally, they are concerned about employees damaging goods intentionally in order to get them free or at a reduced price. I can see that being a problem in a big store like Wally World, but I'd like to think that employee loyalty runs a little deeper in smaller, local establishments like Tractor Supply, etc.
Congrats! You got a great deal going for yourself there!
