special tools needed for pulling an automatic transmission?
Are there any special tools needed to pull the transmission in my truck? I specifically have seen ads on ebay and harbor freight talking about “ford, gm, etc” transmission line disconnector tool. I have access to a set of similar looking things for AC lines…but have never used them. Planning on a “driveway” pull and a “back porch” rebuild”.
Metric sockets and wrenches. My question to you is how you are planning to support it and get it out from under the vehical?
Also, a digital camera to photograph every step of removing so you can reverse every step, including the rebuilding of the tranny.
the method of pulling will be a pair of floor jacks and 4 hands....will see how it goes.... benchpressed many transmissions into and out of my mustang and have also done my mazda using a cherry picker and jacks..... so we will see what we will see.
got it out yesterday...am pretty sore today. Did it in the driveway as planned. used 2 small jacks and 2 people for the transfer case and then 1 jack and 2 people for the tranny. Lowered it down, kinda slid and shoved it to the ground onto some cardboard, then jacked up the side of the truck until it would clean.....drug it out by its ears I guess you could say! Its sitting on the back porch now waiting to be torn down!
And yeah...too greasy to take pictures...but have done stuff like this a few times and am pretty good with the reassembly.
i would say as far as "engineering" goes, its the same for the construction world as is the automotive world. everything seems to be over engineered and under designed!
I think that before a vehicle goes into production the engineers should have to simulate a bad tranny, or other parts of the vehicle, and have to pull it out. Maybe then they would rethink some of the designs.
that has been a thinking in my family for years now. getting to the right bank, exhaust manifold to exhaust rear flange bolt was just about STUPID and all they would have had to do was relocate the O2 sensor 45 degrees........ but dont get me started....
