Question 5 speed stuck?

Hey guys, I know this is the wrong place (sort of) for this question. Since it's about a late model 5 speed truck, but after I posted some questions on the other boards the people aren't as nice! Anyway I have a 1989 F150 inline 6 EFI and it's stuck in gear? You can start it, but when you let out on the clutch it dies?? Actually I don't have it yet, but I'm goin to buy it. The guy who has it for sale has just put new tires on it and is tired of messin with it. He bought it from the original owner it has 120,000 miles on it it's an XLT 2 tone blue with all options and he only wants $500 for it. So I'm BUYING it. If I have to put another tranny in it or whatever, I'll buy it. Back to the question, I dont know what all else it's doin, but the guy aint mechanical at all and for $500 I don't figure I can go wrong. Do any of you guys know anything about these 5 speeds?

Thanks and GOD bless

One question, will the truck roll? If the trans is locked up, most likely it was run low on lubricant and has gears seized on the main shaft. If this is the case, it is cheaper to replace it with a pullout or a reconditioned one.

It has an M5OD, a pretty weak trans, IMO.

i know exactly what this is, a shifter dog locked in gear to prevent the tranny from going into 2 gears at once, it happened in our 69 mach I's TKO600 not sure if yours is the same or a similar tranny, but on ours, we had to drop it (not as hard as it sounds) and theres an access panel in front of the rear shifter location. Under there, there are 3 metal pieces, called dogs, they should be aligned, but what you are saying, one of these dogs will be either forward or backward, use a crowbar or a large screwdriver to pop it back into place. and then put on an after market shifter.

I finally got it home, I started it up and I could move the shifter through the gears (a little) then it kind of stuck and wont move at all. I did manage to make it back up a little bit, but like I said it stuck and wont move again? I'm goin to take the cover plate off the trans tunnel and get in there and take the top off the trans. My next question is, when I take the top off the trans is there goin to be stuff go everywhere? Like springs and ***** and gears and stuff? I've never taken a stick trans apart before? I havent checked the oil level or anything, I just got it home, and am in the process of getting together a plan of attack.

PLEASE HELP!!!! If you have a exploded parts view or anything I'd APPRECIATE it very much!!!

Thanks again, I think it is a M505? I'm not sure I just know it's a 1989 model I6 5speed.

Question

Come on guys, I need some of you guys to help me. I took the top of the trans apart, to see what is going on? I found out it is a M5OD trans, I also found out it was definately run low on fluid. There AINT none in it now!! Well there is an ounce or two, anyway, when I start the truck and let out on the clutch it dies. I took the top off and managed to move the gears around a little bit, then I could get it into 2nd gear? I think, and made it move. I can't get it into reverse at all, and I cant get it to shift properly at all either. I really don't know what's supposed to move and what's not supposed to move? When I took the top off, I found a small pin, about an 1/8th in dia and about 1/4 inch long. I dont know where it came from. I've been told something about the rubber plugs in the top of this trans leaking and causing it to loose fluid and mess up the bearings. I'm not sure that's what happened or not, but I do know there is no fluid in it now. Should I put fluid in it, or just take it out and tear it apart to figure out what is goin on? I found one at a junkyard and the guy wants $650 for it, and another guy wants $800 to rebuild it. That seems a little high, but again I know nothing about these things.

I'd like to keep it a stick if posible, but like everyone else now money is tight, so I was thinkin about just "patching" it up if I could? Thanks for any help and GOD bless

Terry,
Does it smell like its cooked? if so I'd search for a replacement. We have a great pull-a-part yard here where you can get a tranny for $150 + core. It sure helps on projects like this.

I don't have any experience at all with that tranny (heck I've only been inside a couple of trannys and its been years) Any chance of finding a book?

Bobby

If there's one peice of advise I could give you it would be "don't bite off more than you can chew". I've made a few good friends over the years that are good at various things and we tend to go to each other for advice. As much as these forums can help nothing beats having help in real life. There is a wide array of knowledge on here but it's hard to help over a key board sometimes, especially something like this that needs more hands on help.
So find someone you trust and get it done right the first time because when your stuck in the middle of nowhere you'll kick yourself for doing it the cheaper way. Trust me I've been there.

Hope you get it fixed, but do it the right way!

Am I right in thinking M50D's are fairly easy to find?

As soon as I saw the topic I thought - "That sounds just like what I went through with my Ranger."

The lack of fluid seals the deal....

Is this another gearbox that is filled with mercon III? If so, I bet the last fluid it had in it may have been the wrong stuff too, and that is another way to annihilate a transmission.

I'd say get a guaranteed used one and swap it out. Keep the old one though, and either rebuild it yourself, or check into having it done.

Talking

Thanks guys, for the info. I have a buddy who has rebuilt several 5speeds and has alot of parts from some of the spares he bought. He said he'd come over and look at it? Anyway, I've also been on a few other boards and found out a few more things. The pin I found came out of the shifter rails. It could be that since the pin is out the shifter aint' movin both rails? That would explain why it's stuck in 2 gears at once? Anyway, I'm waiting for my buddy to help. I've done favors for other folks and they always return the favors. I love my buddy's we're a pretty tight group. I had just got this truck this week, and got to talk to my buddy yesterday, he'll come over this week sometime. I just thought that since you guys have done everything to these old trucks, you might have some good, and cheap idea. Like I said the junkyard wanting $650 for a used one don't make sence to me. That is a fairly common trans. I Love the truck other than this problem, and since I got it so cheap, I can afford to do whatever to it, I just might have to wait to do it right.

Thanks again guys!!!! I'll let you know what happens

Good deal. I'll be looking for the follow up notes.

I have a TK 5-speed I'll be tearing into someday soon. In my heart I know these trannies are tuff as nails, and I have a gut feeling they can be built stronger yet.
