I have replacedthe power steering pump on my F-150 4x4 but it still makes noise and hesitates and is harder than normal to turn. Is there anything else I should try?
Thanks,
Bob
Those symptoms might indicate a cavitation problem. When air is introduced the pump will not work properly.
Now there are a coule of ways to introduce air into a system, one is remve the fluid, and add additional fluid, like when you change any component.
The other is from foaming of the fluid. The foam is actually air, and the air gets carried through the system during normal use.
This foamomg can occur when fluids that are not compatible are introduced. Many times an operator will top off the reservoir with ATF when PS fluid should have been used, or the fluid has just fatigued and is no longer any good.
MAking sure all of the fluid is correct and fresh might be the way to go here for starters.
Do your self a favor, get a extreme duty pump for your truck. It's a saginaw pump with the metal resevoir, got mine at oreilly, but napa, autozone and advance carries them. I can turn my steering lock to lock now with no whine, boy what a difference! The lines bolt up just like with the standard plastic ford pump.
