Block heater upper

I saw alot of friends here, us timers when they plug there trucks in when its cold out!! The company that I used to work for, we used to plug are trucks in at the end of the day, until the next morning!! Thats what I have bin doing all the years I had my truck.. Am I doing something wrong? I thought they turn themselfs off & on during the night, when the water gets warm? Or do they stay on all night long??

I'm pretty sure they don't have a thermostat that cycles them on and off as required, they just continuously and put out a fixed amount of heat. So they probably shouldn't be used unless it's fairly cold outside.

They do not have a thermostat, but are also only about 1000 watts. The folks who use a timer (like me) do so to eliminate the excess electricy usage during the early evening hours bacuse all you need is about 45 minutes to one hour before starting up the truck. I normally set mine to run for about 2 hours before I typically start out in the morning because I do leave early sometimes and don't want the headache of continually changing my heater's "start time". The electricity saved will pay for a HD outdoor timer in less than one winter.

EDIT: Oh, and I typically will plug mine in when it's going to get below 30 degrees just because it sits outside and is not in a garage, and I chose that temperature only because it let's me warm up in the cab within about 5 minutes of leaving the house.

Get a heavy duty one rated for 15 amps and you should be fine.
