I have a 5 speed, f150. What other trany would fit behind it. This is my second time I need my trans fixed. And I just had it replaced 1 year ago. The shifting fork is making noise again. Im thinking there is more wrong with it than that.
Including the year is always a good idea. But since the only 5 speed that was ever installed in an F-150 was the Mazda 5 speed, that's probably the one. It doesn't have the greatest reputation for strength around here, but it's biggest fault is that it leaks transmission fluid from three rubber plugs on the shift cover.
Other than that, it's a good tranny.
There's a tech article on here that explains how to replace the plugs.
If you have been used to a 5-speed transmission behind your 4.9, I don't think you will be happy with the performance and fuel economy of a different transmission.
My bad, 1995 and it is the mazda. When I had it fixed the first time at 170,000 I had the that boot up top replaced. Then at 185,000 the shifting fork in the tranny went bad. Then at 200,000 its bad again. Gas milage is not an issue. The new rear end i just put in it is not for gas anyway. At 80mph the motor is really humming. But anyway, I was wondering if there was a stronger tranny. I get around 14 mpg now, was getting around 17.
I run a SROD Top Loader with a 1.0 third gear and .82 OD. Not the kind for racing, but she gets the job done well. Bought it used 11 years ago, so who knows how many miles on it. Only problem was the "itty bitty" shaft that goes in between the 2 halves of the shifter broke. Welded 'em back together, been slamming gears ever since!!
How can I be sure of what tranny I have? I'm fairly sure it's a 5 spd. It has overdrive. Are there any numbers on the tranny? I looked but couldn't find much.
I think its a M5ODR2 (Stands for Mazda 5spd OverDrive, the R2 just means that its beefier than the R1 which is in smaller trucks). I had to change the shift boot thing a while back so I did some resherch on it.
I'm going to crawl under ole' betsy and look once more. Probably not today though. Between church and the rain, I don't really have a chance.
All I know is... My transmission DOES NOT LIKE HEAT. At all. In fact I really thought I was losing it, but after I quit my job 35 miles away and started work in town, I immidiately(sp) noticed no more super hard shifting or banging. Every now and then it hits hard, but not too often.
