Hey guys running 292 y I have a question about the balancer. I've been driving my 54 for the last few days and developed rattle at idle. Upon inspection I can see a clean space between the inner belt groove and the hub the timing mark is on which looks like the balancer may be coming apart (the alt belt/water pump belt are still lined up as they should be). My question is "Is the balancer on a 1963 292 with 2 belt grooves a 2 piece balancer like a ch#$y. The only other balancer that I've seen was 1 piece. Displaying my ignorance, again. Thanks Kurt G Y-blocks rule.
Guys I really need an answer to this question. You see sunday night my daily driver (a Honda Civic) was stolen Insurance said there was either 15 or 20 day wait before payoff. I had to pull the 54 out of the garage and its making a noise it never made before. Any help/advice would be nice. Kurt G Y-blocks rule.
As Morris suggested the Y block forum could answer your question - I seem to remember a thread down there not long ago that discussed the balancer as being 2 pieces with a rubber insert between. Seems to recall the entire pulley needs to be replaced when it starts to slip.
I'm not familiar with the Y block balancer but I can tell you that most balancers are 2 piece. There is the inner core that is seperated from the outer ring by a thin strip of rubber. That is how the balancer works, being two piece like that with the rubber helps it to dampen out vibrations. Its pretty uncommon for the rubber to disentegrate, and if it were loose enough to rattle it would probably come flying off of there.
It sound to me like you have a pulley that is attached to the balancer, this is also common and is usually bolted to the balancer. have you checked the bolts?
Once as a teenager I tried using a three jawed puller to remove a balancer. Well, I removed the outer piece...oops, pulled it right off the rubber. I was able to put it all back together but it was never quite right after that...............
Well I came in to take a break. Did you know that using a balancer puller is just pulling off the pulley, not the balancer. Guesswhen pulley is off then I go to 3 jaw puller. Man talk about luck. First car stolen now project is breakin. Kurt G maybe Y blocks dont rule, the just sound good.
I'm runnung a 292 out of a 1963 f100. Bill I have a balancer at my dads house I think but I have to go check. The balancer that messed up has 2 pulley grooves. I really neede to find a good 2 or 3 groove pulley balancer. I plan on adding power steering. If anyone knows an outlet for one I would like to know. I think I would even bite the bullet to go fluid dampner if one is avalible. I plan on running the Y evermore. Kurt G Y-blocks rule, until broken,

Well guys, Iy looks like the balancer ring is coming off the pulley assembly. I have another question, Does the seal press in from the front like brand "C". My timing cover is so dirty I cannot tell. Kurt G.
I just ordered the 2 belt from Greensales. They said it will probably take a week to get it but at least it will be coming. Thanks for all the advice Kurt G. Y-blocks rule.
