I have a 2000 F250 with 120,000miles. This morning (about 25 degrees) I went to start my truck and the volts meter was reading around 11 and the truck would not turn over. Later that night I had the same problem except it eventually cranked after some slow cranks. I have replaced both batteries and the altenator in the past six months. Any ideas as to what is causing this? It only has the issue when the truck is very cold and has been sitting for more than 6 hours.
Make sure that the connections on the battery terminals and starter are all good, clean, and tight. If it's not cranking or cranking weakly like you're describing, that would sound like a weak battery, or a poor connection.
Next time before you go to start it, and you're expecting it to crank weakly, test the voltage at a battery with an actual multimeter, and see what you get. Should be 12.5+ volts. Once it's started, it should be about 14+ volts to indicate the alt is doing it's job.
I would get a battery hydrometer tester..(napa has one for $20) and check each cell of the battery.. Even newer batteries can be defective. Then like Ryan says, check your battery voltage when the engine running.. should 14+ volts.. if not, your altenator might be go bad. Also, you might try putting a battery charger on the batteries, one at a time for a full charge..
id say it might be your starter. if it turns slow and gets faster . grab a flashlight, and check both bolts on the starter housing, one of mine was cracked causein intermitent slow cranking or no cranking.
i got one of THOSE beasts on Ebay and never had a problem since.
and service from this guy was great.
I have an F-250 2002 7.3L and there was a junction box on the drivers side that the positive cable ran to/from that was completly corroded and caused the same results.
Something else to check if it is there on your model
