No offense but this is the 87-96 section of the forums. If you need help with an 82 I would suggest using the correct forum.

Also, it is often stated that is much cheaper to sell you vehicle and byh the 4x4 you want than to convert yours. I'm not sure if this holds true witht he early 80's .

I hope you can get her done right.

1st step consider why you want to convert.
2nd step consider money involved with conversion.(even with free/cheap parts)
3rd step consider buying a factory 4x4.

If you are attached to the truck, converting is an option.
if not just, use the money to buy a factory truck.
It can be done, but consider every option first.
Just my opinion

The transfer cases are not the same thru the 80s.

u can get the parts for less than 500 dollars with a transmition from a junk yard depending on were u are located.

TRANSFER CASE 4x4 $75.00 $10.00 $12.50
TRANSMISSION 5 SPEED MANUAL $43.09 $11.82 $8.12
AXLE FT ASSY COMPLETE 4x4 P/U-VAN $141.38 $24.94 $30.45
75.00
43.09
141.38
10.00
11.82
24.94
12.50
8.12
30.45

Get a donor truck to take parts off or switch you body to it.

Its just time consuming to swap. There are so many small parts which is why I said to get a whole donor truck (less then 500 for a non runner here )

Here is quick list to swap

Spring buckets (2x4 have a higher bucket you need 4x4)
Front housings
tie rods (may be same )
Springs and mounts 4x4 r wider don't really need to swap them
Shafts
transfer case
linkage
tranny ( if you cant convert yours 2 fit)
Wiring ( not much on your luckly)
Blocks for the rear (between spring and axle )
Rear gears to match front or vis versa
Cross members (maybe )

You will have more in running for parts than cost of a parts truck . But it can be done in drive way . Swapping your body (we do iit all time (Rust) . Can be done quickly also if you have a lift or allot of friends. But have fun . I know about attachment to trucks
