The 100 has a massive boxy look while the 70 has a more traditional bell shaped look. Additionally, most 100's have drainplugs. The 100 holds around 17 quarts including torque converter.
I found out I have the 4R100 in my 99 Expedition 2WD. There is NOT a drain plug in the pan. The TR code on the door sticker is "E". Where are the decoders located? Where can one find out the total capacity of the Transmission and Torque converter?
My 99 has the "E" code and does have a drain plug and Mercon on the dipstick. I changed the fluid this weekend and it took ~13 quarts total--draining the pan and converter. Was very easy with the drain plugs but would painful with out. Note that Ford has a TSB out now that Mercon V is backward compatible with Mercon--actually, companies can't even license Mercon fluid anymore so if you see some, be very wary that they are not licensed and may not have been through the proper testing and approval process. Mercon V is a much better fluid--better frictional characteristics and low temperature properties.
