I Have an 88 f250 4x4, and ive been having problems with the IFS, so im getting rid of it, and puttin in a solid axle out of a 79 f250, is the front axle from the 79 a dana 44 or 60? and is the axle rear axle from my 88 f250 a 44 or 60? any help would greatly be appreciated
your rear axle should be a 10.25 sterling axle {made for ford}if it were me i would try to find a dana 60 out of an F-350 from a closer year I think there are some issues with the leaf springs being different if you can find a donor truck look for one of at least 1994 vintage as the sterling had been upgraded with longer pinion gear and better bearings from all the info i have found !They can be found on ebay right regular
Thanks for the info. although im happy with me rear axle, i was mostly just curious as to what it was. the reason im wondering about the front axle, is that its only limited slip, and i want a true locking differential for it, and i dont know what axle to buy the diff. lock for.

1979 F250 4WD = the front axle could be either a Dana 44 or a Dana 60.
CODE ID: Look on the right axle tube just adjacent to the front cover..this is the area where Dana bolted on a metal plate that has the axle ID code. The tag is approx. 2" X 1/2" and has a 7 digit code on it. Example of the code: 603098-1. Post what you find, I can decode it.
On some 44's the code is on a metal tag that is held on by one of the bolts on the removable cover = these are usually missing.
