Hey guys, I need some help from you guys, hopefully you know the answer...
I've found an older Ford that I am looking at buying, but I cant find any information on it anywhere..
To begin, this truck is BIG. It's got what is close to a semi cab. It's a two door cab with a bench seat. It has (rough guess) a 35-40 foot bed, all on one frame.
The tag on the door says "7000", and diesel.
I believe it is an '82. It has a rounded body in shape of a square.. Very simple design. Two round right on the front, similar to an old VW micro-bus.
I hope this information is specific enough.. Any help would be great..
Someone suggested it was a D70, but I cant find anything on a vehicle by that name.
Hi, Is it a cab over or conventional? It use to be that if it said 700 on a ford it was gas, 7000 was basicaly same truck but diesel. It could be a few different ones, Ex: C-7000, B-7000, LN - 7000. Buy 2-round on the front I am guessing ,"headlights", but is it 2 per side or just 2? A photo would be of great help if possible. With a little more info some one can help. You may want to look up the 3 I mentioned above and see if any of them look close, Mike

Thanks Mike. Sorry about that, I got up in the middle of my post.. I meant to say "two round headlights" on the front. It is one per side. I will look up the trucks you posted and see what I can find.
It is a "cab over" I belive. I assume you mean that it doesnt look like a conventional truck, rather, the cab is above the engine, instead of behind.
The "C" series were a rather decent truck, better when they have a diesel. The gas versions generaly had the 534 V8, 1-2 miles per gallon, OUCH!! There were many of these as fire trucks, so if you are looking to restore/repair it you may want to keep an eye out for a retired fire truck, they are usually kept up as far as body, etc. They are a neat looking old truck and were produced for many years from a small box or dump truck all the way up to a semi tractor with tandum rear. I know I called it a cab over but truly it is a forward control truck because you set in front of the front axel. This type takes a little getting use to but they are easyer to turn, IMO. The bus I drive every day is this type and I prefer it to conventional as far as turing in a tight space, NOTE: Always make sure the cab is locked down, if not it can get ugly fast when you stop. Best wishes and post a photo when you get a chace if you get it.BTW these came out with 2 headlights and some years had 4 headlights as well as there were chrome grills and front bumpers, Mike.
Thanks again Mike. This one is a diesel. I just got off the phone with the owner of it. He's the second owner, he's owned it since '92. He doesnt know the mileage on the truck, but says it's in good running order, good transmission, and a 2-speed rear-end.
What all should I look for as far as buying it?
What should I look to pay for the truck?
Thanks again
-Mike
Well as far as what to look for, I cant tell you every thing but I will tell what comes to mind.
1. Look at over all truck, see if any thing jumps out at you{oil on the groung, broken glass, body rust, is truck setting level, not droped down on one side which is a sign of spring trouble,} the overall apperance.
2. Look at frame, bent, cracks, rust through, signs of damage?
3.look at rest of truck while at frame, look at the rear end, leaking? Look as it has been "messed with"? Same on the front axel, look at brake drums, etc. do they look neglected or look as if it has been kept up?
3. Look at engine/trany. does it show leaks? {almost all engines are going to be at some degree of dirty} but a leak will usually stand out. Is any thing missing from engine and why? Same with trany.
4. Look at cab and interior, this will tell you a lot as to how it was taken care of. Look at floors and body to see if there is rust damage that will have to be repaired.
Those are some things I look at, then of course start it up and let it run a little while to see how it sounds and acts.
As far as price, there is way too many factors for me to even attempt to give you an idea. A few thoughts though,
1. If it has air brakes, that is a plus.
2. If it has good working power steering, thats a +,
3. Looks to be solid, not filled with bondo, etc. thats a +,
4. starts/runs well, there again a +,
5. How well do you like the truck and are you comfortable driving it??? Never buy some thing like this for looks alone unless you are getting it to resell.
6. Will it meet your needs? size, type, fuel milage?
7. on average any more a truck this size will bring 500.00 - 1100.00 in scrap price, plus any odd's and end's it may have.
8. How long since it has been on the road??? why was it parked,if it was???
That is just a few things to consider, as well as if the price is going to put you in a "binde", do you need it to go to work very soon??? Keep in mind, when you buy a used truck there are going to be other things to fix that you dont see at first. I hope this is of help to you.
PS> one last thing, is you license , does it match what is required for the truck? I have saw people buy a truck and then realise they dont have a license to cover it.
