alternator wiring?

alternator wiring?
hey,
i replaced my alternator but being an idiot i didnt pay attention to the wires when i pulled the old one off. im confused because it seems like the wire with the red cap should go over the battery connection but it doesnt fit. it does fit perfectly over the fld terminal. does this mean field? what is this and am i connecting the wire in the right place? also is the battery connection left unconnected because i have no wire to go to it? thanks for your help!

hey,
thanks for the repsonse. there are two wires. the red with the cap and a black one. i believe the black one goes to the sta terminal. if the red cap goes to the fld terminal this leaves the battery terminal without a connection. is this correct? thanks
