I have a friend who just bought an 89 F150 4.9 six (I own a 94 that runs fine), anyway he knew when he bought it the original owner told him it would not start but does run and it is my understanding that he took the intake off the throttle body sprayed either gas, wd-40 or carb cleaner in and it cranked over and started for a second. Now he has replaced the battery, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and has gas at the fuel rail. It cranks but still does not start is it timing? throttle sensor? (I don't know if it has MAS air)is it that? or maybe the computer? PLEASE HELP
Are the plugs wet with gas , do you have spark?
My 1988 4.9litre on occasion has flooded , and the only way to start it is to hold the accelerator to the floor , and crank , crank , crank..when you hold the accelerator to the floor , it cuts off the supply of gas to the engine , as the computer senses that the engine is floded , and pumps in air to dry out the plugs.
Be sure to check for spark , and gas to the engine .. if all checks out , maybe a fuel pressure problem?
Let me know how you make out.
Sounds like a bum fuel pump. Had one in a Le Sabre go the same way. Pull the air duct of the air cleaner assembly and dump some gas down there. If it starts and runs momentarily, you've got a fuel problem. Check the fuel pressure and suspect the pump. My $.02
The other day, I pulled the connector loose to plug in a code reader (over the driver's front wheel well) and, due to corrosion, pulled a wire out of its connector (next to the data link). When I went to start the truck to get the codes, it cranked and cranked, but never turned over. I wouldn't have had any idea as to the problem if I hadn't noticed the green end of the copper wire hanging down. Maybe power to fuel pump? An idea, anyway.
