Just wanted to let everyone know that i drove my 75 highboy for the first time yesterday! i bought this truck from my neighbor (after it had sat in his junkyard across the fence for five years) for $250 for parts for my 77 highboy. a few years later i sold my 77 and had barely touched the 75, so i decided to get it going again. it had no motor or radiator and the trans was shot. my grandpa had a 70 3/4 ton that had been sitting inside for 10 years, with a recently rebuilt motor (360), that i inherited. after i got it running and drove it around to make sure it was ok, i parked it again and transplanted the motor. i had pulled the trans to get it rebuilt, and after 3 mos., they told me they wouldnt get to it until after january. so i took it home and rebuilt it myself in my garage (c6). got it put in yesterday and drove it. everything seems to be working fairly well. all thats left now is to put on the exhaust and the flatbed. my original plan was to build this for a cheap mud truck, but my brother in law saw it and wanted it for a hunting wagon, which changed the build some and had me fixing things that otherwise would have been removed. oh well, we saved another one!
WAY TO GO! Just got mine running last weekend and felt like a kid on a pony. Like someone told me there's nothing like the feeling of getting a project doing what it's supposed to do!
the only reason i brought the 70 home was because i wanted the motor out of it for the 75. i didn't actually inherit it, i asked if i could have it for the motor and if i didn't do anything with it it would have sold with the farm and been out of the family. i didnt care to do anything with it mostly because it was 2wd and not the body style i was into. it also had manual steering and manual drum brakes and the front end is completely worn out. motors and tranny's are a little hard to find around here and i didn't want to spend much money doing it. i did consider a body swap too before i decided what to do with it. the 70 body style has grown on me, considering it is a black basically rust free pickup, and i have some aluminum wheels that i think would look good on it. im now trying to get a wrecked 79 f-150 with a 460 and c6 to swap in, add power steering and power disc brakes, rebuild front end, and use for a trailer puller. but that will be after i get my rebuilt 460 into my 79 f-350.
