Just wondering if anybody has adapted a 5.0 throttle body to their 4.9. What kind of power gains did you get? And what needs to be fabed up to make it work?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jun-02 AT 00:39 AM (EST)]I'm not promising anything but I think they are the same. Go find a 302 and I would say compare them. Just replaced TB on my truck (302) and they use same gasket. Even if same size would say ford used same ones on both apps. So if it will work recommed BBk or Edelbrock 56mm TB if going with trade for more power.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Jun-02 AT 04:47 AM (EST)]The 5.0L and 4.9L throttle bodies aren't the same size. Swapping in a 5.0L throttle body has been discussed before, and we came to the conclusion that the stock 5.0L could be do-able with some major modifications to the upper intake on the 4.9L. As for the larger 5.0L aftermarket TB's, there's no way unless you build a custom intake manifold. There just isn't enough material to remove on the 4.9L intake to match up to the larger 5.0L's diameters. It can be done, but it would be a rather extensive mod.
Additionally, the improvements probably wouldn't be all that great since the major restriction is the intake manifold itself. The intake doesn't have the capacity to flow the air that the larger TB would allow (it barely can keep up with the stock TB), which basically renders the swap useless.
The bolt pattern is the same but the upper manifold would need to have the inlet flange opened up to match the 50mm 302 T/B bores. There may or may not be sufficient stock to do this, it has been reported both ways and is probably dependent on the quality of the casting.
The 300 intake system is pretty well matched, so there's little gain in modifying just one part. If you're going to do the large valve conversion, port the head to match, extrude hone the manifold and do the 19# injector swap then by all means fit the larger T/B. You'll also need to have the PCM reprogrammed to support that much change.
