LAST EDITED ON 27-Sep-00 AT 07:46 PM (EST)[p]Other than the forged crank, the HD has forged Pistons(mine are missing...), connecting rods, sodium filled(or is that cooled?) valves, a lower stock compression ratio(8:1.) External clues to identify a HD by are the alt bracket, which has no place to mount an air pump, a solid spacer in place of the EGR spacer, a plug in the exhaust manifold where the egr pipe would normally connect to, and, if it's still in a vehicle, the emissions sticker will have "Non Catalist" written on it. The easiest way to het a HD is to get a 300 out of a F600, as the HD was the base engine in that series. I have a Non Catalist emissions sticker and I am trying to find a replacement for it to put on my truck, if you want the calibration number off of it, I will get it for you on the weekend.

Thanks Evan...I most certainly have the LD 300 as I have an air pump mounted on the alternator bracket. Also...in another post I read that you get better that 26 mpg??? With all thoes mods, other than a 240 head, how do you do it? On my stock 300 i get 17.2 highway with the three speed with overdrive running 1500 rpm @ 65mph in od. I guess my question is; will modifications including a clifford water heated mainifold with a 390 Holley, a hedman header and straight dual exhaust actually improve my gas mileage?
my truck has a 300 too, i may a budget modification, i i had two cats on my exhaust i cut the second one off, and ran straight pipe all the way comming out to in front of the rear wheel, ive noticed the motor catches rpms alot quicker than before, now, my question, i had the carter feedback carb on it, ive disconnected all the emmissions crap that runs into it this cause it to blow out enough gas to shoot fire, someone up here suggested a older non feedback carb.... got one on it today, doing this swap really cleaned alot of junk aounr the manifold, but yet its still wasting alot of gas, what can i do here?
by the way, here in this part of nc im not worried about emmision itll pass any time
Tim, adding a header or duel manifolds, 4 bbl carb and intake, and duel exhaust should improve your mileage overall. On the 240 in my 65 F100, my hi-way mileage improved alot, but city mileage didnt improve much, so... be prepared to expect anything if you modify your 300.
How do I do it? Well, I've got it running as lean as is safe, the timing is set by ear to the highest idle(damper is on my truck wrong, can't use a timing light.) And I drive with a light right foot(with gas at $3.17 a gallon, you have to.) I think that running the engine at it's torque peak will make for better mileage(Mine cruises at 60 at 1950 rpm, peak torque is at 2000 rpm.)
Good luck

To side gap, you cut the part of the electrode that you noprmally bend to gap the plug real short. So now it doesn't extend over the center electrode. Then bend what's left of the electrode you cut to the center until you get the right gap (it'll now extend from the side.) Now the spark jumps from the side instead of straight down. This way there's no metal "blocking the spark" from the combustion chamber, the plug is opened up. I think its one of those Carolina Boys dirt track/stock car trick, that I had never heard of either. (they're constantly searching for more HP)
