Thinking about trading a 02 2500hd duramax for 08 350 dual wheel V10 4.30 rears. My horse trailer is 12,400 with 1 horse on. You guys who already pull this amount or slightly more are you happy with the V10? I find it hard to justify the extra money for the 6.4 ( I only put on 5 to 6K mileage a year). Would it be reasonable to expect 7 MPG on mixed towing (two lane and some interstate) with the V10 given the weight of my trailer. I just don't want to kick myself for changing to gas after having a diesel. All thoughts welcomed...
I am not sure on the amount I tow, I know their are guys on here that pull 5ers' and really don't complain (to much) on gas mileage, I pull a 16' car trailer with a trail ready cherokee, I need to get the weight of it.The cherokee has a full roll cage, 37"s tires, 1/2 ton ford axles, I want to say that i am pushing around 4500lbs, and I really don't know what my trailer weighs, I will usually pull down 9-10 on the trips (roughly 300 miles). The V10 shines when towing, probably not much help in your question, but this is what i am getting with and 01 F250/ 3.73's, and 285/75/16's
My Fiver weighs 12300 fully loaded. My combined weight is 20800 and my Fiver is 13 feet high. My 05 3 Valve V10 T/S trannny has pulled this load 12000 miles with outstanding performance. I can get between 7 and 9 miles per US gal depending on wind or grades.
I also have the 4.10s and most people on this forum ( not me ) feel the 4.30s would be much better. I even read an RV forum where a guy with a new 08 V10 changed out his 4.10s for 4.30s and said he noticed a big improvement. His truck was a 4x2 so he only had one set to change out.If I ever decide to try out 4.30s all I have to do is go to the available 65 series tires and I will get the same revs as 4.30s at a much lower cost because I have a 4x4.
AJkelly, go for that V10 with 4.30s. You're going to love it.
With 12500lbs in tow I think you would probably be looking at getting 8-9mpg with the new 6.4l diesel. 7-8mpg with the V10 sounds resonable. I'd stick with the 4:30s with the V10 especially since your going for a dually.
Take a look over in the 6.4l forum and you can clearly see they are not getting the mpg that the 7.3l and even the 6.0l gets.
You'd be fine MPG wise. I tow a mid height 8500 pound fiver and 4 people in the truck and get 8-11 depending on wind and hills. Seems like the aerodynamics are more important than the weight once you get up over 8-9000 pounds. You won't have the same grunt off the line like the diesel, but more than enough. Back in April, I was where you are now...diesel or not? I bought a 100,000 mile V10 and couldn't be more pleased.
That was the primary reason I went back to gas too. My truck will be three years old next February an I just turned over 12K. Of course there were a bunch of secondary reasons.
I pull a 12000# fifth-wheel an I get right at 8 mpg towing.

Me also....did the math...no way to justify another $5K for a smoker.
Also gives me an upgrade path when I get the itch for a new truck... "C'mon, honey....that new diesel will really pull our camper soooooo much better....."
ajkelly you have a private message...never towed with my 05 drw but in the city i can get up to 12 and 15 on the highway...i dont think ive heard less than 8 mpg with the v10 unless EXTREME conditions
I pull a 10500 lbs horse trailer, around town I get 10 mpg, last time I towed the trailer I got 9mpg on mostly state and local roads. I have plenty of power and the torqshift is great. I figure on putting 8-10K miles a year so I figured the extra cost for a diesel would take a long time to pay for it self.
I have the 4x2 with 4.10 rear end.

ajkelly,
I've got a 2V and 4sp V10 with 4.30's in my Ex. My combined weight I tow is right at 17,000#'s. But my TT likely presents a taller wind profile than a horse trailer (maybe). I've tugged this TT this year 5000 miles including the Appalachians. I do NOT drive slow (63-65mph) with 70mph thrown in there too. I'm averaging 8.2mpg this year. I can drive slow or fast and I get pretty consistent 8. I truly think as biggziff does that the WIND resistance has most to do with the mpg's. A lower profile trailer even though heavier I think would do better. Although these REALLY high profile 5'rs that have given you info with the 3V motor are right in your range.
Most people have NEVER experienced the shear power a V10 and 4.10's or 4.30's have to offer...I've not experienced the added 52HP or 25ft-lbs trq the 3V does either!!!...
I see you are from PA...I've been to the Rockies in 2006 and they didn't scare me off as I'm heading back in 2008...BUT if I played at REAL altitude ALL THE TIME...I'd want a super or turbo charger...
It's a 3 horse trailer, 12 foot short wall, with a slide. Ya, the horse is putting on some winter weight to. Thanks for all the insight so far. I really like the 450 the more I look things over, but no V10 option. Do you think some kinks will be worked out on the 6.4 by job3? Tough decisions, trying to use you guys for hindsight.
