Hi all...I got a 2000 Ford Explorer XLS with 150,000 miles on it. Its a v-6 with a 4.0 engine. Most of my miles are highway miles. I travel alot. I see now for the last 2 days there are 2 or 3 small drops of oil dripping from the rear of the SUV. Got any ideas what it could be? I'm puzzled. I just had the SUV serviced as usual...2 days later is see small drops of oil on the garage floor. I've got at least another 1000 miles to put on from Monday thru Wed. Will any repairs if needed wait until after I get back? Please help ASAP...
When I'm standing behind my SUV I can see drops of oil at the rear of the vehicle in the center of the vehicle but yet its behind the tires. Does this help?
Its usually about 2 or 3 drops of oil laying there. I wipe it up and when I get done with my running and etc...and pull back in the garage...a few hours later their they are again...
Get down and slide under the back end, look for oil on rear axle/differential, keep in mind that oil will blow back under driving condition, so you may find the source further forward. Would help if you describe the colour and consitency of the oil.
I will try to get underneath sometime tomorrow. The fluid is black and kind of thick and dirty feeling...I'll post more tomorrow...thanks so much for your help
I found this phrase and number....I have no idea what it means but am passing it on to you about the oil leak. It seems to have let us some now....there were only 2 small drops on the garage floor this morning. Anyway...here is the phrase and number...
TSB 14048...Some vehicles may experience an oil leak after at the rear crankshaft area after servicing. Have you ever heard of this before?
It means that the main seal on the crankshaft, (Rear of engine) will weep oil, yes as the new oil disolves the gum in the engine it may open a passage under the seal and so leak.
This does not appear to be the case on your truck as you describe the leak to be at the back of the truck, "fluid is black and kind of thick and dirty feeling" that would better describe differencial lube.
BTW, have you crawled under to determine the souce? Its been 3 days since you indicated you would do so, we cannot assist you unless you provide concrete diagnostic information.

No I haven't had a chance to get under and take a peak...I just got off the road for 2 days.I don't know what I'd be looking at anyway!! ha ha...I know the leak is coming from a part that is directly in line with the back tires in front of this big round thing...at like the joint of it. I'm sorry I don't know much about the mechanics of vehicles. I can see oil splattered on this joint so I assume thats where its coming.
Sounds like the rear differential has a leak. Could be the actual cover gasket or a pinion seal or a u-joint/coupling at the driveshaft. It is more likely to be a seal at the front of the differential.
It is a problem that you will probably want a pro to take care of.
Take your truck to a shop that any of your friends have had a positive experience with. So ask around. Tranny and general repair shops can handle this with not problem.
The problem seems isolated to this area alone - Gaskets, seals don't let the shop try to sell you more repairs. Ask for the old parts afterward too.
I hope this helps, I wish we could see conditions and locations.
Just have it looked at ASAP.
Well the new pinion seal is in. He charged me $20. for the seal....then a $ 40. charge for lube ( I forget what he called it ) and then his labor which was $35. He cleaned off the area and let it sit to see if it leaked or not....and everything is ok. The real test will be whats on the garage floor in the morning!!! thanks for all your help....have a nice holiday season....
Can anyone help please. I heard a thump or clunk...under my Explorer in the front by the driver floorboard. It doesn't happen all the time. Occasionally it will clunk sometimes when I hit a bump...sometimes not. Any suggestions for me??
I presume this did not start after the last repair.... could be anything from a loose balljoint to loose wheel bearings to loose engine/transmission mount, needs investigation, get down there and shake and push/pull components.
