I have a 1988 Ranger that has a 2.9L with a four speed tranny with overdrive. After it sits for a few hours the clutch will have really low pressure on the pedal that you can feel, and it dont engage until its to the floor. If I go put clutch fluid in the reservoir and pump the clutch for a while it will build up pressure and be fine for a while, but I want to get it fixed and dont want to put too much money into it. I looked underneath to see where it was coming from and its somewhere around the top of the tranny. Could this be a cracked line up there or do you guys think the clutch is shot?
Thanks in advance
Blake
could be a bad master and/or slave cylinder. If it were me and I was gonna keep, Id replace them easiest first, (Master) I dont know where the slave is on your year model. It could be external (hopefully), but if its like mine inside the bell housing go ahead and R&R the entire system when its apart, as that is the easiest and best time to fix it all.
Hose leak, MC leak and the clutch slave may leak.
90s models had the slave inside the housing, and this would force on to change all clutch related parts - once in there deal -
I can't remember if yours in outside or inside the housing.
I'll try to look up the info on that, unless you know already.
I looked at it tonight and the master cylinder looks fine. Around how much do you think it would cost to get it fixed? I dont know much about clutches and stuff on the Rangers.
Thanks
Blake
costs will vary by area. you are looking at a minimum of at least $500. I have found on these its gonna be necessary to change the master if the slave has gone bad. Its not a rule or anything but these are fairly flimsy masters and only cost about $40 plus install and if you have everything out already........................
If you can change a clutch on any car and have all the tools, supports jacks etc its fairly straight forward task. If you dont have the tools etc, they will generally run about what it will cost to have done unless you plan to do more work. Its a toss up. but if ya pull the trans go ahead and replace everything its cheaper in the long run IMO.
