So far my stance has been Ford with Ford. Due to a good price, my stance may be moving to Chevy with Ford.
I have been offered a 1980 Chevy 10 Bolt rearend for FREE!! Does anyone else have this set up, and how well does it hold up to a 460 and what modifications are needed to make it fit a 1949 F-1?
I just recently found out that suspension and drive line parts are not considered darksider items and as long as you don't discuss anything regarding the other guys engines, will be safe from any public floggings.
I agree though that the 10 bolt is OK in the correct application where you are not pushing a lot of weight with a reasonable amount of horsepower. It is not the horsepower or the weight that kills these differentials it is the combination of the two that spells disaster. I would opt for the 9" ford (like finding hens teeth) or go with a GM 12 bolt as they are more abundant and way less $$.
9 inchers are easy to find kusto .heck i had the one from my twisted modified 74 1/2 ton frame sitting here forever . it had the heavy third memeber the three rib one , and was gonna give it to anyone who wanted it , but alas noone would come get it . geuss where i sent it . had to clean up the garage and the other drive .
You guys can kill an idea ALMOST as fast as my wife.
I will probably take the rearend anyway and see what I can get for it if anything.
The good news is that scrap metal prices are at an all time high so it definately has value. (I just took 1600 # to the recycler-one load in my 2004 Ranger). The bad news is that the scrap metal prices are high because most of it is due to the demand for scrap metal in china.

Between my self and two other guys that have been searching for a Ford 9", we have all either come up empty handed or the owner wants a mint for it. What are those thing s supposed to be worth. I thought a couple hun at most.
53olderthanme i'dsay parts availability both oem and aftermarket and the strength issue . you'll break that factory diff long before that 9 will give way. everyone uses 'em dirt track , drags , nascar , they and the dana 60 are quite possibly the two toughest available . kusto , i geuss it all depends on where you live . i can find 'em fairly easy most times in junk cars and trucks jus' sittin' round . i just bought a 73 ford van for the running 300 and auto that i traded to a freind for some work to be done later { the van was 15 dollars and a 25 tow } and it had an open 9 in her and i offered that one too a buddy who still races dirt track but he didn't want it as it would require shortening and it didnt have the discs . so away it went as well as the one from my 74 frame . right now i have an ltd sitting witha disc 9 in it over in a freinds storage lot and i paid 150 for the car , running , 400 m / auot , and drove it to the lot . now that i've " bragged " it'll all dry up here you know that right ?

Its seems that lately there has been confusion on this whole darksider, stocker thing. Somewhere along the line some folks have turned this into an engine type thing. To the contrary it has been my experience the only thing that our light hearted Darksider label referred to was the fact that you where doing custom mods to you truck that were not offered as original equipment. Example would be: if you put a MII ifs in a 1955 f100 that would be Darkside, even though it is a Ford IFS it is not stock, there for Darkside, no different than if you used a Chry. IFS. Darkside. Then of course we added shades of darkness along the way.
Stocker to me, simply meant Restoration.
I guess if what we want here at FTE is constant controversy and petty squabbling over what brand engine you put in your hot rod we could make the Darkside thing all about brand of engine.Or change our label to Custom. The only thing I know for sure is that you can't be a stocker with a off brand engine or a 351 in your 1948-1960 Ford truck. Just my thoughts

Kusto, I in no way am in no placing any individual blame on you or anyone in particular.
MT I was just taking a little jab where I probably shouldn't have and I am over it now.
Back to the issue at hand. I guess I should put a little more effort into finding out which models and years used the 9" and start the search over again. I have a buddy that is running a 73 Dodge Dart in the drags and he was looking for a 9" to put in it for next season. Which models had the narrower 9" rear end?
i think the narrowest is gonna come out of an early stang if it has one {9in.} or if you are really lucky you'll find one of them thar lincolns from the late 70's maybe early 8o's that look like / were based off of a granada and some of them lil' jewels had a 9 with discs already attached . im sure someone here's gonna know more than me .
Also, the '66 Bronco uses a smaller 10" drum. '67 Broncos up to '77 has the bigger drums. Sometimes it's just easier to buy a housing from Moser, and buy a set of custom axles, too. Then find a JY third member and brakes to make it all work. My .02

The narrowest 9 inch was in 57-59 Ford passenger cars but are getting hard to find..
On the subject of 10-bolts, it depends on how much abuse you plan to give it. If you drive normally with no burn-outs or drag racing they will hold up fine. I could probably put a Pinto rear in my truck and get by with it because I am very easy on the drivetrain...
