just wondering what the signs of a front wheel bearing going south is? seems when im am turning fairly sharp to sharp as i can i feel a kind of a grind but not really a grind, and sort of a popping (hope i am making sense) . i do not have the hubs locked and i am not in 4x4, it does it when i am turning to the left, but i havent heard it yet when going right, but i will check that out today. it almost feels like when you have too big of tires and you turn sharp they rub, but i have stock size tires.
while i was out today, it does it both ways, i turned sharply at a slow turn, nothing really happened, then went i little faster and then it started, i was maybe going 5-7 mph
do you have stock hubs? Might be one of those not unlocking, which is how you tell when one or the other has gone bad. Even if it says unlocked, when they go out they will lock in as their failsafe. When my hub went bad it just started grinding constantly, and kept getting worse. It was pretty obvious.
I too was having the same problem. I had been ruling the turning sharp out because of having 315's on my truck. I heard a little grinding but thought it might be my wore out tire tread wore uneven. I went to get my tires balanced and steering checked out today at the local tire center. instead of doing that, they jacked up my truck and told me my wheel was ready to fall off because of a shot bearing. one way to check to see if your wheel bearing is shot is to jack the wheel up and rock it. if there is play in the wheel its a good sign your wheel bearing is shot. it also will do this if the ball joints are bad.
My steering all of a sudden got loose. my truck shakes when braking. Now I know why. the wheel has lots of slop in it. They said for them to fix it migt be $350. I already bought a wheel bearing off ebay today for $152 after shipping. anywhere else it will be $200+
well thats my 2 cents.
hmmm, thanks to both of you for the advice, this may be what my problem is, but how do i tell which one is staying locked on me, and i do have stock hubs by the way, and is it hard to change a wheel bearing, or what do have to do just change a hub out? is it a straight forward proceedure for my self, i do know alittle bit about mechanics but not a pro of course!!

Crawl under the truck and try to turn the u-joint right behind each wheel. If one of them doesnt spin, its probably locked.
The wheel bearing on 4wd are easy to change, since its a sealed unit. Only bad part is one side runs between $300-400.
The hub itself is simple to change. The snap ring comes out, hub slides out, new hub slides in, snap ring goes back on. Here's a nice writeup from Guzzle on how to do maint on the needle bearings inside the hub assembly. Only difference would be putting the new hub assembly and o rings back in when you put it back together. http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/nblube.html
Edit: Oh, the nice thing is, it all comes apart with a 13/16" socket. Lug nuts, caliper bolts, and bearing assmbly all use the same size.
well while i was out hunting today i checked and my front axle u joint turn freeley, and on my way home i hit some pretty rough roads going about 40-50 mph, and now my truck seems normal, like nothing ever happened, what do you think about that now.
do i just leave it and wait and see if it happens again then start investigating more??
i got auto hubs, and i can also get out and lock them if i want to. i am kinda leaning toward one of them was maybe stuck as well, i used my 4x4 quite a bit today so maybe useing it a lot today freed whatever was stuck, i tried it again a couple of hours ago and everything is fine, i switched it to 4x4 a couple of times and turned sharp both ways after i turned it off and everything feels great, kinda puzzels me, but i am gonna leave it alone for now and see if it does it again at another time.
Maybe the hubs just needed a good bit of abusing to get them right. Never know. I'm glad it sounds like things are normal. Wheel bearings dont fix themselves, that's for sure, so you could probably completely rule that out.
thanks alot everyone for your help, very much apprecieated, i think in the next weeks to come i will service the bearings and atuo hubs, i read the info and it doesnt seem to bad to do, i am i little handy with the wenches to a certain point.
