Normally that's where they're stamped, but I've found them on the right frame rail also - up near the motor mount x-member.
Some of us have a wide range of truck years that we mess with
any typ info on a 46 would be greatly apriecated, i ntend on staying all ford and drive the freeways / parking lots of phoenix az. any info is good , this 46 aint preety but i intend to make it the one that gets up the freeway on ramp "first" every=time. so far guys thanx for you r support.
Anywhere between the steering box and the crossmember is good, however, they are not always complete. On one of my '46's the number is not complete, it is only a partial VIN. On another of my '46's the line worker started stamping the VIN, made an error, and restamped the correct VIN. Originally, the ID number was to be determined by the number stamped on the top of the trans bellhousing, so the frame VIN wasn't as critical it seems.
Your right about it being stamped on the top of the transmission at the front.
On the other hand if the engine or transmission has been changed which is quite common, then the Frame becomes the critical part. After all if the vehicle is original then it must have the same frame.
I know when I am buying a truck I always go to the Frame area, and if there is a transmission and engine in the Truck, with any luck it may be original.
Just as an example my 37 was an all original Truck, with all matching numbers, but it had the 4 speed with "Granny Gear", and to make it even better it had a 4.26 Diff.
Now where in hell are you going with that setup, not on a Freeway. I replaced it with a more user freindly 3 speed, and a 3.78 Diff. and it still isn't considered a Freeway vehicle.
So all in all if the VIN, is missing on the Frame, and there is no Driveline in the Truck, there are 2 other places. They are under the cab, and on the hump over the Diff. Most likely places for the rust, than up at the steering box area as at least there was grease or oil there to protect it.
thanx five star .. yep no drive train . floor preety rough I think thats what happend to the break peddle nada gone . any way its not totally gone. you mention the hump at the diff ? the rear axle is there im not sure its the genie the axle tubes dont taper down. I preety much figured out the alighnment problem i was seeing onthe cab/frame body. I gotta tell you I got it cheap and could only see it from the bottom _up it was a storage shed wrapped in several layers of plastic tarp.any way i can fix that.at first after un wrpping and seeing it I was woried about a possble late 40s ore other chassis preety sure now its 46 thanx and please give me any hints .. or info greatly thankfull the org.my friends call me that.
